(10/10) Lord's Long-Awaited Advent

When the greatest master of yoga Suka heard King Pariksit's words, he praised him as a great saint. Then, he started: O great devotee, as well as all the great sages, please listen. What I am about to tell you was told by Suta at the forest Naimisa – the sages (Saunaka and others) always listened to this narrative. O King of Mankind, you have definitely done well – you became firmly attached to listening about Lord Govinda. I will tell you about the result that one attains by listening about Krishna – just asking about Him destroys all sins. Whoever asks, speak or listens about Him becomes very pure. One can attain all possible attainments in the entire three worlds just by enquiring about Krishna.

Kamsa, Jarasandha and others appeared as human kings and spread their demoniac influence all over the mortal plane. Earth started to cry out of fear of this destructive situation and came to take shelter in Lord Brahma. She prayed, 'If you do not want me to live in hell, please tell me what I should do. I cannot take this burden of demons anymore. Seeing this, all the demigods have come to your feet, too.' Hearing Earth's cries, the four-headed Master Progenitor (Chaturanana Prajapati) assembled Indra and other gods, and then all together they went to the Milk Ocean to pray to the Club-Bearing Supreme Lord. They recited appropriate exultation as prescribed in the Vedas, and Lord Brahma sat down and began to meditate deeply. Then, they heard the Lord's message from the sky, 'O gods, please listen to the message of the Lord. The Chakra-Wielder spoke: I know about Earth's pain, so I will arrange for a solution. In the meantime, you all must take birth in various families within the Yadu dynasty.'

যদা যদা হি ধর্ম্মস্য গ্লানির্ভবতি ভারত ।
অভ্যুত্থানমধর্ম্মস্য তদাত্মানং সৃজাম্যহম্ ॥

yada yada hi dharmasya, glanir bhavati bharata
abhyutthanam adharmasya, tadatmanam srjamy aham

'O Bharata, whenever there is a decline of religion and an uprising of irreligion, I personally make My advent.'

(Srimad Bhagavad-gita, 4.7)

'When religion goes down and irreligion rises, then I personally make My advent. I come to the world Myself – I do not send any avatar, I come Myself.' That is why the Lord came in Kali-yuga also, but at that time He actually had two reasons...

So, the Lord also said that His alter-ego (His second self) Sankarsan took shelter in Devaki's womb. He appeared to manifest all incarnations and teach others how to worship. Then, Yogamaya said, 'You will enter Devaki's womb, and I will appear as Nandaraj and Queen Yasoda's child.' Although Sri Devaki Devi gave shelter to the Lord whom the whole world worships and adores, she had to give birth to the Lord while living in Kamsa's prison.

When Lord Krishna entered Sri Devaki Devi's womb, the whole cell became illuminated with extraordinary light because it was the Invincible Lord Himself who was living within her. There was no need for any light or torches. When Kamsa saw her forever smiling face, he started thinking, 'My killer must have entered her, otherwise would she be so happy and why would there be so much light coming from her? Hari must have come to kill me. What should I do now? It is not like the Lord will give up on killing me, but it will not be right for me to kill my own sister like this – I will be cursed and go to hell after this life.' Thinking in this way, Kamsa started waiting anxiously for the Lord to be born. 'When will Hari come to finish me?' He kept thinking about the Lord. He thought about the Lord for a wrong reason, but he remembered the Lord.

[To a devotee] Do not sleep! How can you sleep? I want to read more and more, but I see that we have no time already. There is only nine or ten minutes left, but we must speak about the Lord.

When the time for the Lord to appear came, all gods started showering praise and exultation. Everybody left all other thoughts and only thought about the Lord. To destroy all darkness, the moon also rose in the sky to herald the Lord's auspicious advent. At last, the Lord appeared in His eternal, cognisant and all-blissful four-armed form from Devaki's womb. His parents, Devaki and Vasudev, started offering Him their obeisances, and then the Lord assumed His two-armed form. Vasudev and Devaki came to senses, 'Oh no! What will happen to our boy now? They will kill Him!' So, Vasudev took the baby across the Yamuna, to Yasoda and Nanada Maharaj's house in Gokula. And when Kamsa came, they showed him a baby girl and Kamsa killed her instead.

All the demigods and sages started showering flowers from the sky. They offered obeisances and praise in honour of the Lord's appearance at Nanda Maharaj's house.

Kamsa expected the baby to appear, but to thwart his expectations, the Lord appeared on the eighth month. He hurried His appearance to destroy all the demons, so He chose to appear earlier. This is described in Sri Hari-vamsa. Lord Krishna appeared on an astami day (the eighth lunar day), and on this day the moon is not full, but when Chandradev realised that the Lord was about to appear, he showed his full form, so although it was only an astami, the moon was like on a purnima day. Chandradev thought, 'My Lord is coming, so how can I be only half on this day? I will show myself in full!' By the wish of the Lord, even the moon became full on that day. At that time, the Lord appeared, revealing His full form, too. He looked just like effulgent Lord Narayan, so seeing Him, Vasudev and Devaki began to offer praise to Him.

After Lord Krishna appeared, He was taken to Gokula and so many things happened. I will tell you about it tomorrow in the morning. Tomorrow is Nandotsav. You must break the fast in the morning. They are offering many preparations to the Lord today, but we must not take it – we will break fast in the morning.
