(9/14) Leave Bargaining Mentality His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
I have heard and seen it with my own eyes that Gurudev did not care for money. I will give you one example. Once, some man from Dum Dum Park gave him a lot of money: he gave two cheques worth thirteen and twenty-four lakh rupees. When Gurudev took the cheques, he turned them over and saw there was something written on the other side: from the thirteen lakhs, five lakhs are for Bamunpara, three lakhs are for Hapaniya, two lakhs are for here, one lakh are for there, and so on. Gurudev tore the check and threw it in the man's face. Seeing Gurudev's anger, I got scared and took the man downstairs. Later, Gurudev told everyone, 'This man must not come upstairs to see me ever again.' The man gave Gurudev money, but he gave it with some condition: you must do this, this and this with this money. When you give money to Gurudev, Gurudev will decide what to do with it. This is what Gurudev explained to me, and I learned this from him. This is all common sense. Gurudev could understand everything easily, he was infinitely powerful and knew what everybody was doing. This is the kind of guru we have got and taken shelter in. There is nothing higher than this in the world. We have come to this kind of line, to this kind of parampara. We have come to this line to practise Krishna consciousness, to receive our gurudev's grace, to come to the Lord'a abode. If you only walk around with tilaks and neckbeads on thinking you have become a great sadhu, this is not Krishna consciousness. When you do something, you must always think whether what you are doing pleases gurudev or not, whether gurudev is pleased with your service or not, whether gurudev is happy with you or not. If you do not always pay attention to this, then it means you have not understood anything. Always remember this. 'I want to do this service', 'I do not like to do this', 'I will not do that' – we must not bargain with gurudev like that. This is how shopkeepers and customers are. We must do whatever gurudev likes, it is not necessary to know anything more than that or to argue about it. Always remember this. We must do whatever gurudev tells us to do. 'Kise bhala haya kabhu na bujhinu (কিসে ভাল হয় কভু না বুঝিনু). I can never understand what is good for me.' In other words, 'I do not have the qualification to understand this. If you tell me to do something, that is good for me.' Gurudev knows what is good for me – if he says, 'Do this, it will be good for you,' then it must be so. It is not necessary to want anything else. We must not try to cheat gurudev – if you try to cheat your guru or the Lord, that means that you have other desires. We must never be like that. Always remember this. You cannot have your legs in two boats. We must always keep to one side. Ladies understand very well what is called chastity. Our focus must always be one-pointed, then we will be successful.
