(3/8) Lord's Mercy

The Lord is very merciful. You know that the Lord rescues and bestows His mercy even on those who come to kill Him—and not just those who come to kill Him, but even those who come to kill Him when He was a small baby! In this way, by drinking Putana's breastmilk, Krishna gave her the right to take the place of His mother.

When Putana came to Krishna wearing a gopi dress and beautiful ornaments, Krishna became charmed to see the dress of a gopi. Visvanath Chakravarti Thakur describes this beautifully in his commentary. Whoever she was (the Lord knows everything, so He knew that she was coming to kill Him), she came disguised as a mother in a gopi dress, Krishna gave her the position of His mother. When Krishna started drinking her milk, He sucked her breast so hard that He took her life—He sucked the very soul out of her body! Putana cried, "Leave me! Let me go!" But will Krishna leave one so easily? He says, "I do not easily accept anyone, but if I do take somebody, I do not leave them so easily." Then, Krishna made her run a little far from the house, and when she ran to a nearby field, He finished her off, and her body fell on the ground. What is the proof that Putana received Krishna's mercy? It is described in Srimad Bhagavatam too. When Putana died, she assumed her demon form—she had a very big body. It was very hard to burn it, so Vraja-basis cut it into many pieces, and when they burnt it, entire Gokula (Vrindavan) was filled with the scent of sandalwood and camphor. From this, it can be understood that Lord Sri Krishna rescued Putana. He is so merciful!

Do you want to hear another example? I have read it in the writings of Param Guru Maharaj Om Vishnupad Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj. Listen attentively. You have all heard about Prahlad Maharaj, have you not? Have you all heard the name of Lord Nrisinghadev? You can understand from this story what sukriti is. How did Prahlad Maharaj become a devotee of Krishna at five years old? How did he become so surrendered to the Lord's lotus feet?

In his previous life, Prahlad Maharaj was a man called Vasudev. He was born and raised in a village in South India, and near his village, in a jungle, there was an old abandoned temple. Whose temple was it? Lord Nrisinghadev's. Even before Lord Nrisinghadev appeared, He was worshipped in some places. The temple near Vasudev's village was in such a neglected state that nobody came there. Only some old lady would come there once a week with a plate of fruit. Other than that, nobody looked after the temple or cleaned it. One time, Vasudev went out and met a beautiful girl. He fell in love with her and became lustful. He wanted to take the girl to some dark, secluded place and was thinking where he could take her. Then, he remembered the abandoned temple and took the girl there. When they came to the temple, the girl said, "This is such a dirty place! I will not do anything here!" Vasudev said, "Wait, wait! I will clean it!" He cleaned the temple and got some sukriti through that. As the result of that sukriti, he was born as Prahlad Maharaj, the son of Hiranyakasipu. He became a devotee of the Lord, and he listened to Srimad Bhagavatam from the mouth of Narad Goswami.

Such is the result of service to the Lord. The Lord is very merciful.
