(6/8) Beautiful Pastimes (2)

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Uluberia, noon programme, 30 January 2020, part 6
Translated from Bengali

There is a beautiful part in Srimad Bhagavatam, and Srila Visvanath Chakravarti Thakur wrote a commentary on it. You can find this concept in Srimad Bhagavad-gita as well, but there are many other things in Gita, so if you read Bhagavatam, you will find more in it. Sukadev Goswami told that Krishna is very clever and sly. He told Kunti Devi, "Auntie, I am going back to Dvaraka now. I have done My job—You have got your kingdom back, so there is no need for Me to stay here now. I am going back." And then, Srimad Bhagavatam describes Kunti Devi's reply very beautifully (Sri Sridhar Swami and Srila Visvanath Chakravarti Thakur's commentary to these verses is very nice). Kunti Devi said, "Prabhu, even if we get a kingdom, no matter what we get, we have no other way except Your holy lotus feet. If You do not stay with us, what is the use of kingdom?" What Kunti Devi said is right. "If You are here, we have everything. We pray that we may worship You wherever You are."

Kunti Devi has understood this, but we are ignorant children—like small children, we eat soil, we want this, we what that, and we do not understand anything. When will we get mercy? We do not know even that... We want to come to the Lord, but the Lord knows what for you are coming. Do we have the eyes to see the Lord? We do not, but the Lord can see what you are coming for. The Lord can see everything well.

Srila Raghunath Das Goswami left everything like stool and urine. We carry stool in our stomaches, but once we pass stool, if we look behind, we feel repulsed and hold our nose. Do we feel any attachment to it? We carry it in our stomaches, but once we discharge it, will you try to hold on to it after that? You will not. You will be annoyed and repulsed by it. In the same way, you must give up visaya (material world and everything related to it)—you must have no attachment to it. "I have given up all visaya at the Lord's lotus feet, and I pray to have no attachment to it." You may not like to hear it, but the problem is that you have left stool and urine, why do you still feel attached to it? Srila Raghunath Das Goswami left everything like stool and urine and went to Mahaprabhu.

Mahaprabhu told him:

মর্কট-বৈরাগ্য না কর লোক দেখাঞা ।
যথাযোগ্য বিষয় ভুঞ্জ' অনাসক্ত হঞা ॥

markata-vairagya na kara loka dekhana
yatha-yogya visaya bhunja' anasakta hana

"Do not show your false renunciation to people. Serve accepting material things, but without attachment."

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 2.16.238)

It is necessary to have no attachment—be detached. Rather, attachment to the Lord and to the Lord's service must come instead, but we are just the opposite—we are attached to material desires and lust (kama). "I will accumulate more wealth and property," "I will build a bigger house," "I will buy another car"—we are attached to lust. We are not attached to the Lord. This is the main thing.

Sanatan-siksa: The Path to the Supreme Goal
'Now hear about the fruit of devotion—prema, the ultimate goal of life. Deep attachment to Krishna grows into what is called love. This prema is the goal of life, the abode of all possible joy and happiness.' It all begins with sukriti..

Do you know what a sensualist is? One who eats fancy food, wears fancy clothes,
hoards money, is attached to the company of women, and works hard
to make a fancy place to sleep in.
