Chasing Away Ghosts and Nonsense

হরে কৃষ্ণ হরে কৃষ্ণ কৃষ্ণ কৃষ্ণ হরে হরে ।
হরে রাম হরে রাম রাম রাম হরে হরে ॥

You know, sometimes you become possessed by a ghost—this is when you start thinking about your house or you think about other things. What is the remedy for this?

enechhi ausadhi mayanasibara lagi'
hari-nama maha-mantra lao tumi magi'

"I have brought the medicine to dispel Maya. Pray for this Hari-nam maha-mantra and take it."

The remedy to make the ghosts and witches leave is the Harinam maha-mantra. You must chant Hare Krishna. Chant the Holy Name when your mind becomes unsteady (fickle). Somebody asked Srila Prabhupad, "When I chant the Holy Name, many different thoughts come to my mind. What am I to do?" Srila Prabhupad said that it is necessary to chant the Holy Name louder. Chanting the Holy Name mindlessly is not good—it is finger exercise. You count the beads and chant, "Natiputi, Natiputi, Natiputi (নাতিপুতি, নাতিপুতি, নাতিপুতি)—grandson and granddaughter, grandson and granddaughter, grandson and granddaughter." Do not practise finger exercise—chant loudly and forcefully, "Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna," etc.

When you call your children, you call them by their names, so when you call out to the Lord, you must chant His Name, "Doyal Nitai (Merciful Nitai)! Doyal Nitai! Doyal Nitai!" That is why, you must also call your children and grandchildren with the Lord's Name, devotional names, not some material names because when you call them, you will be pronouncing the Lord's Name and you can get liberation through shadow chanting of the Holy Name (Namabhase mukti paibe, নামাভাসে মুক্তি পাইবে). When you call your children by their names, they turn to you and answer to your call. In some places, people always make hulahuli—if you call your son by hulahuli, will he come to you? He will not. You see others do hulahuli, and start doing it too. I know a man who became a Muslim. Why did he do it? He said, "I heard about Muslims and decided to become one." They do not understand any difference, they do not know anything, but if they have a good heart, then it is good anyway.

You must call the Lord by the Lord's Name—call the Lord by chanting Hare Krishna. As you start doing anything, chant always Hare Krishna first. Before you start doing anything, call out, "Hare Krishna! Hare Krishna!" Chant Gaura Nitai's Names, then everything will be all right.

It is necessary to have sincerity and chastity. I have told you this many times.

[Noise in the audience.] Who is talking? Hey, bring leukoplast—we will seal the mouths of those who are talking. You are sitting here in front of the Lord and talking gramya-katha—not hearing about the Lord, you are talking about other things, about your house and village. What is this?! There are no lila-kirtans, no pala-kirtans here—there is no dancing here. There is kirtan going on, and you must grasp it within your heart. We are not hired kirtan singers. I have not come to chant kirtan—I have come here to make you chant kirtan.

You are arranging asta-prahar kirtans or twenty-four-hour kirtans, spending so much money, but even if you do such kirtans your whole life or life after life, you can never reach the Lord in this way. I can guarantee you that. If you can bring the Holy Name of Krishna to your mouth, then you will get benefit, and the Lord will rescue you. Those people (lila-kirtan singers, etc.) make offences and you go to listen to it...

You worship Kali, Durga—you offer some anjali, but they eat meat, they sit on chairs with their shoes on, crossed-legged, swinging their leg in the air. There was Saraswati Puja recently—I saw people sitting on chairs cross-legged with shoes on, swinging their leg in the air—do you think Devi will be very happy with that? Is this how you worship? For example, we never go upstairs atop the nat mandir because we have faith for the Lord, and we show respect to the Lord. It is necessary to always have faith and treat the Lord with reverence.
