(9/10) Become Pure Servant His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Do you think you can get the Lord by doing "namah", "namah" or by going to the temple in the evening and offering some flowers and incense? If you only worship your son, offering flowers and incense to him, will that fill his stomach? It will not. You must give him milk, you must give him food. In the same way, you must serve the Lord in various ways—you much cook for the Lord, you must let the Lord to rest and do all other services. This is how you serve Vaishnavs also. Only putting a garland on His neck and offering some flowers and incense is not all that there is to the service of the Lord. Do not be like this. Genuine disciples (sisya, শিষ্য) are those who can take disciplining (sasan, শাসন)—who can tolerate chastisement and correct themselves accordingly. It means that if you are told, "Sit here," you will sit here; if you are told, "Go there," you will go there; and if you are told, "Do not go there," you will not go there. Those who can be submissive are called disciples. There are many gurus roaming around in this world. There are many gurus who are ready to take your money—there are all kinds of ancestral and family gurus. But it is very rare to find a spiritual master—their number in this world is very small. There are many karmi-gurus, jnani-gurus, yogi-gurus. It is very difficult and austere to meditate on the Lord. In Satya-yuga, people would meditate without eating anything for thousands of years, starving their bodies. They practised so much meditation and yoga-asans to come to the Lord, but is there such austerity in chanting the Holy Name? Then why will we not chant the Holy Name? The problem is not that we cannot chant—the problem is that we do not want to chant the Holy Name. I am telling it to you straight. We do not actually want to chant the Holy Name. We work the whole day, and when we come home, we sit and watch TV series or read the news. Do not read newspapers. There are only gossips and criticism in them. People criticise politics and discuss others' faults and mistakes. No matter how much good you can do, there will always be somebody who will look for faults in you. For example, we have made a big festival. Everything was cooked well, but one subji had too much salt. Somebody will always say, "Oh, there is too much salt in it!" and will not only think it to themselves but will also go and tell others about this fault. This is criticism and fault-finding. Even if there is no fault, somebody will still speak bad and go about telling others about it. This is the nature of fault-finders ('dosi-buddhi' people). Such offences are to be always given up. Suppose you are making a fire sacrifice—you put one spoon of ghee and then one spoon of water, then again ghee and again water. Can you make a fire sacrifice like this? You cannot. So, if you do something good and, at the same time, also do something bad, then everything will go out through holes (all good result will go out through the holes of your offences) just as if you pour water into a glass with holes, all water will fall out.
