Surrender should be complete: sad-anga saranagati. It is easy to say 'full surrender', but it is very hard to do that; just as it is very easy to say, 'I have become a disciple', but it may not be true. We are not proper disciples. And if you are not a proper disciple, you cannot be a proper guru. First you must be a proper disciple, then you can become a proper guru; otherwise, you cannot be a proper guru. So, first be a disciple of your guru.

Being a disciple is not only taking initiation. When you take initiation, it is the same as getting admission to a school, college or university – it does not mean that you have passed the final exam. First you must read, you must study and attend the college or university, then you must take the exam, and then you will get the result. First it is necessary to study. So, we join this mission and think that we have become great devotees, but we have only joined it – after joining it, we must serve the Lord and our Guru. This is the most important thing for us. We must serve. Whatever we do, we must always give ourselves there (we must do it heart and soul).

We are always fighting against other people, but we must actually fight against ourselves. We have so many enemies inside us – kama, krodha, lobha, moha, mada, matsarya (lust, anger, greed, attachment with this material world and material things, illusion, envy); we must fight against ourselves. That is our priority. If we overcome these enemies, we can conquer the whole world; otherwise, it is not possible – if we cannot defeat ourselves, we cannot conquer the whole world. We have so many bad things, so many material desires in our hearts, but all material desires and attachments must go away – the only attachment that must come to us must be for the Lord and Gurudev. This is the attachment that we need.

We all know our brothers, sisters, parents very well, but we do not know our Guru, we do not know the Lord! We only feel skin attachment to our parents, brothers, sisters, husbands and wives, but we have no connection with the Lord, with our Gurudev. It is necessary to establish a proper connection, and to do that, we must accept proper guidance, we must have proper tolerance and chastisement. These are the main things in our spiritual life.

Oh... They are working for themselves, passing their young age with that...

One time, a brahmachari, who had recently got married, came to Srila Gaura Kishor Das Babaji Maharaj and said, 'Babaji Maharaj, I have got married...' Srila Babaji Maharaj said, 'Very good. Now you can do the shopping and buy bhog – your wife will cook, you will offer bhog to the Lord, and after your wife has first taken prasadam, you can take her remnants.' That is what Srila Gaura Kishor Das Babaji Maharaj said. He said also, 'Your wife is not for your enjoyment. Your wife is a servitor of the Lord.' These are very interesting things. There are many good pastimes of Srila Gaura Kishor Das Babaji Maharaj.

During some time, Srila Gaura Kishor Das Babaji Maharaj slept in a public toilet. Somebody asked him, 'Babaji Maharaj, you are sleeping in this public toilet, and so much bad smell is coming. How can you tolerate this kind of bad smell?!' Srila Babaji Maharaj replied, 'I can tolerate the smell of stool and urine, it is not a problem, but what I cannot tolerate is the smell that comes from materialistic people – their smell is very dangerous, and I cannot tolerate it.'

So, attachment for the Lord should come. It is necessary to have this kind of attachment. You are spending energy for your own enjoyment now, but you must instead spend this energy for the enjoyment of the Lord.
