Service Without Ego and Tiredness His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Question: Could you please tell us more about the importance of serving the devotees? Doing service is the main thing, but first you should know why you must do service. You should understand that if you have no service, you have no mercy, but through service you will get mercy. Everybody must do service, it is very important. Mahaprabhu, the Lord Himself, did service to His devotees. Krishna Himself served His devotees—in Dvaraka, Krishna did the lowest service, He cleaned all the devotees' shoes; He left His chair and gave it to Sudama, and He and all his wives (Rukmini, Satybauma, and others) massaged Sudama's lotus feet. Why did He do that? He did it to show us that we should serve devotees. Also, at the Jagannath Ratha Yatra time, King Prataparudra he had so much desire to get mercy of Mahaprabhu. At first Mahaprabhu did not give him His mercy, but after the king did the sweeping service, he got mercy from Mahaprabhu. Service mood is the main thing and is necessary for our spiritual life. One can become a big bona fide Guru through service.
Question: How can we avoid ego in our service? If you start with the lowest service, like cleaning the toilet, cleaning the bathroom—if you do that kind of service every day, all your ego will be removed. It is necessary to do the lowest service and to practise properly, then slowly, slowly ego will be removed. Actually, envy is much worse than ego...
Question: Why do we get tired when we do service? When you are doing your service, always chant the maha-mantra, then no tiredness will come. Also, if you you think, "I am doing it," or, "I am doing everything," then you will become tired, but if you think, "I am not doing it, Gurudev is doing it," then you will not become tired.
