(4/11) Gurudev's Transcendental Care

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Adhivas of Srila B.R. Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj's tirobhav
Sri Nrisingha Palli, 12 August 2018, morning, part 4
Translated from Bengali

Yesterday one Maharaj called me and said, 'Maharaj, I have heard you are making a very big building in Mayapur now, and you are writing some names there...' (These are the names of those who were senior devotees or senior sannyasis in Gurudev's time.) I said, 'Yes, I am writing the names of those who are doing service for this big project there in Mayapur.' Then, that Maharaj said, 'Oh, this is not much. I can also send you money – I will go to the bank right now. But I do not want a place in Mayapur, this is not a big thing for me. I want something more than that from you. Please give me a place in your heart.' I replied, 'What are you saying? You are always in my heart...'

You can see what kind of mood some devotees have.

I am not telling you to give me place in your house. We must give place for the Lord in our hearts, but our hearts are full of other things—we have kama, krodha, lobha, moha, mada, matsaryata, ahankar, rupa, rasa, gandha, sabda, sparsa, kanak, kamini, pratistha (lust, anger, greed, illusion, bewilderment, envy, ego, desire to enjoy eye-pleasure, tongue-pleasure, nose-pleasure, ear-pleasure, touch-pleasure; desire for money, women, name and fame), we have criticism and gossiping about other people inside us. With all this in your heart, it is not possible to serve the Lord. Where will you give place for the Lord?

I always tell you: who will have the right, who will be able to chant the Name of the Lord? Tell me.

Devotee: Trinad api sunichena...

Yes.

তৃণাদপি সুনীচেন তরোরিব সহিষ্ণুনা ।
অমানিনা মানদেন কীর্ত্তনীয়ঃ সদা হরিঃ ॥

trnad api sunichena taror api sahisnuna
amanina manadena kirtaniyah sada harih

"One who is humbler than a blade of grass, more forbearing than a tree, who gives honour to others without desiring it for himself, is qualified to always chant the Holy Name of Krishna."

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 3.6.239)

And what did Bhaktivinod Thakur write?

দৈন্য, দয়া, অন্যে মান, প্রতিষ্ঠা বর্জ্জন ।
চারিগুণে গুণী হই করহ কীর্ত্তন ॥

dainya, daya anye mana, pratistha-varjana
chari gune guni hai karaha kirtana

Humility, compassion, honouring others, and giving up prestige—become qualified with these four qualities and chant the Name.

(Sri Siksastakam Giti)

There must be no ego. "I am Math's manager, I am Math's master"—if you think like this, you will not get the Lord—you will get everything, name, fame, etc., but you will not get the Lord. Guru Maharaj also said, "You will never be respected if you cannot respect others." We must be always humble, tolerant and give honour to others. We must be compassionate, merciful to others. Those who have these qualities can serve the Lord. If somebody says something bad about me, this is not a problem—I am actually worse than that... But even such people should be used in service also. You can see ***. I used to beat him at first, but he took everything. It is very rare for one to come to the genuine line. If you can serve the Lord, you will get benefit. Gurudev also beat me to raise me and make a man out of me. Do you know how Param Guru Maharaj raised Gurudev? You may have seen how blacksmiths work. They put a piece of iron into fire, keep it there until it is red hot, then take it out and start pounding with a hammer. This is how they make good, useful things. Our Gurudev also pounds and pounds us to make us good. In his last days, Gurudev fell ill, and I came quickly to see him. I brought something to him, but he said, 'I do not need this!' and hit me with his stick. Gurudev was lying in bed, but he hit me with his stick. He knew that he was going to leave, so he did not want to waste things that would be useless after he was gone – he wanted everything to be used in service instead. What was I to do then? I paid my obeisance to Gurudev and left. I did not get angry. Those who become angry have all left. Those who have ego, pride leave everything and go away.

You have heard the story about Nityananda Prabhu. What did He do? Sivananda Sen tried so hard to bring all the pilgrims, but he was a little late. Nityananda Prabhu had got very hungry and cursed Sivananda Sen, 'May his two sons die!' Hearing this curse, Sivananda Sen's wife began to weep, but when Sivananda Sen got to know about it later, he said, 'This is not a curse, this is a blessing! If your children die by the curse of Prabhu, they will go to the Lord! This is a blessing!'

When Sivananda Sen came to Nityananda Prabhu, he said, 'It is all my fault, it is all my fault,' falling in full obeisance before Nityananda Prabhu, and Nityananda Prabhu kicked him! Think about it—you come with so much effort and end up getting kicked, how will you like that? Sivananda Sen, however, got up and began to dance, 'This is a blessing! This is a blessing!'

Sivananda Sen's nephew Srikanta saw what happened and thought, 'Everybody respects my uncle, and this person is giving so much disrespect to him!' He went to Mahaprabhu to complain, but Mahaprabhu already knew everything and when Srikanta came to Him, he could not say a word. Mahaprabhu asked him, 'Why did you come? Has anything happened' Srikanta could not say anything, so he replied, 'No, nothing... I have just come to give my obeisance to You.'

How are you to understand Nityananda Prabhu? So, when Gurudev punishes or chastises someone, he does it for their own good.
