(4/11) Mahaprabhu's Caution

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Sri Ekachakra Dham, evening class
15 February 2019, part 4
Translated from Bengali

Gauranga Mahaprabhu ordered Nityananda Prabhu to preach Krishna consciousness...

You have come to Sri Ekachakra Dham, and you know that Hadai Pandit and Padmavati Mayi had only one son, Nitai. Taking shelter in Hadai Pandit and Padmavati Mayi, Nityananda Prabhu descended in this world, but when He was just twelve years old, He left this village through the medium of a sannyasi. One time, a sannyasi came to the house of Hadai Pandit and Padmavati Mayi to beg for alms. He asked Padmavati Mayi, 'Can you give me some alms?' Padmavati Mayi replied, 'Yes, I will.' It is a custom that when a sannyasi asks for something, you cannot refuse him. But the sannyasi asked for such great alms! He asked for the treasure of the heart, for the treasure of one's very being, for their only son! Padmavati Mayi had given her word to the sannyasi, and she could not take it back. She said, 'All right. I will tell my husband, and if he agrees, we will fulfil your wish.' When there is a son in a family, he belongs to both his parents, so both parents must decide. The property of the Lord must be used for the service to the Lord, but it was the Lord Himself who appeared in their house.

There is Krishna and Balaram, Gauranga and Nitai – They are actually one body, but They manifest Themselves in two forms (eka-i dehe dui rupa). You also know that Balaram comes as Nitai in Kali-yuga. He was also Laksman in Treta-yuga. Laksman is Lord Ramachandra's younger brother in Treta-yuga, but in Dvapar-yuga, He comes as Balaram, Lord Krishna's elder brother. In Kali-yuga also, He comes first, as elder, to serve Gaurahari. He takes birth in this world to serve Gaurahari.

How necessary Nityananda Prabhu is in our lives! We must understand it. We must know why we worship Nityananda Prabhu.

When Nityananda Prabhu went to Nabadwip to meet with Mahaprabhu, Mahaprabhu told all the devotees that one great personality had come to Mayapur (Nabadwip) and asked them to go and find Him. All the devotees went to look for Him, but nobody could find Him. He is extremely esoteric, extremely hidden. He is the Lord! Is it possible to find Him? But when Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Himself went to look for Him, He found Him at the house of Nandan Acharya (Nandan Acharya Bhavan). This is where Their first meeting took place.

Nityananda Prabhu helped Mahaprabhu very much. When Mahaprabhu told Him, 'Nityananda, you must preach the Holy Name of Krishna in Gauda-mandal!' Nityananda Prabhu understood, 'If I try to explain the Holy Name of Krishna to people, they will take it a wrong way.' So, what did He do? Gaura and Krishna are one: He who is Gaura is also Krishna, He is Jagannath, He is Gaura-Krishna – this is one personality. So, He decided to preach about Gauranga! He would go around chanting:

ভজ গৌরাঙ্গ, কহ গৌরাঙ্গ, লহ গৌরাঙ্গের নাম রে
যে জন গৌরাঙ্গ ভজে, সেই আমার প্রাণ রে

bhaja gauranga, kaha gauranga, laha gaurangera nama re
ye jana gauranga bhaje, sei amara prana re

'Worship Gauranga! Say Gauranga! Take Gauranga's Name! Those who worship Gauranga are My heart and soul!'

(Sriman Nityananda Prabhu)

Seeing His external behaviour and clothes, people called Nityananda Prabhu 'avadhut'. Externally, 'avadhut' is a person who does not follow any rules, who is beyond any standards or rules of this world; and internally, 'avadhut' means He who can clean dirty, bad things – who can rescue and clean the fallen. Nityananda Prabhu sometimes wore white clothes, sometimes yellow, sometimes blue, sometimes saffron. He could sometimes wear earrings and bangles. He did whatever He wanted. When once a brahman came to Mahaprabhu and complained about Nityananda Prabhu's erratic behaviour, Mahaprabhu said, 'You do not know what you are doing!' Mahaprabhu explained to that brahman many things, and in the end brahman apologised, 'Oh, I have committed an offence, I was wrong.' Mahaprabhu said to the extent:

মদিরা যবনী যাদি নিত্যানন্দ ধরে ।
তথাপি ব্রহ্মার বন্দ্য কহিল তোমারে ॥

madira yavani yadi nityananda dhare
tathapi brahmara vandya kahila tomare

'Even if Nityananda Prabhu comes drunk with a Muslim lady by His side, He is always worshippable for Lord Brahma.'

(Sri Chaitanya-bhagavata, 3.6.123)

'Even if Nityananda grabs and brings a drunk Muslim girl, even then Brahma will pay his obeisance to Him.' At the end of their conversation, Mahaprabhu cautioned that brahman, 'Tell everyone about this so that nobody says anything bad about Nityananda Prabhu behind His back! If anybody says such things, they will go to the deepest regions of hell!'

Madhukori Bhiksa
'To do madhukori means like bees that go flower to flower and collect nectar drop by drop, the sadhus go begging for the service to the Lord, not for their own pleasure. They collect a handful at a time and give what they collect for the service to their Guru.'
