(6/11) Meaning and Value of Fortune

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Sri Ekachakra Dham, evening class
15 February 2019, part 6
Translated from Bengali

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu bestowed so much mercy on Srila Raghunath Das Goswami. When the danda-mahotsav was over, Srila Raghunath Das Goswami fell at Nityananda Prabhu's holy feet in a prostrate obeisance. Do you know what Nityananda Prabhu did then? He put His feet on Raghunath Das Goswami's head. He bestowed such beautiful mercy on him!

Nityananda Prabhu also kicked Sivananda Sen! What does it mean? When we say anything to a devotee, if we get angry and say something hard, they become upset, cry and leave service. But Nityananda Prabhu kicked(!) Sivananda Sen. Why did He do it? Sivananda Sen was taking many devotees to Jagannath Puri, and because there were so many devotees, he got a little late. Nityananda Prabhu had to wait, and He became hungry, 'My stomach is making noise, where is Siva?! What on earth is he doing? He does not care what I will eat! He is a rotten grihastha! I have to deal with him, but it is impossible! Let his two sons die!!' He spoke this curse. Hearing this, Sivananda Sen's wife began to cry, 'What is this? A sadhu has cursed my boys!' But when Sivananda Sen came and heard about it, he told his wife, 'This is not a curse! It is a blessing! Even if they die, if this curse can serve some purpose, they will go to Goloka Vrindavan, they will attain the Lord.' When Sivananda Sen came to Nityananda Prabhu, Nityananda Prabhu kicked him on his head! Sivananda Sen got up and began to dance! 'Prabhu, I have got Your mercy after such a long time!'

When Mahaprabhu chastised Srila Jagadananda Pandit, Srila Sanatan Goswami Prabhu cried, 'Prabhu does not chastise me like that, I am so unfortunate! But Jagadananda is so fortunate, he gets to be chastised by the Lord! The Lord is giving sweet things to Jagadananda, but He is giving me bitter things!'

It is necessary to have this kind of fortune. It is necessary to have fortune to get to be beaten or kicked by Vaishnavs! It happens only by great fortune. It does not happen to those who have little fortune.

When Nityananda Prabhu bestowed His mercy on Srila Raghunath Das Goswami Prabhu, he was able to come to Mahaprabhu – all his bondage had been removed. Mahaprabhu then handed him over to Svarup Damodar. In the end, he went to Vrindavan and engaged in bhajan. When Mahaprabhu and Svarup Damodar left this world, he thought, 'What am I do now?' His home was originally in Adisaptagram, but he got so much mercy that in the end he engaged in his bhajan at Radha Kunda in Govardhan. At first, he wanted to take his life, but Srila Sanatan Goswami told him, 'I also had this bad idea, but I was very fortunate to get Mahaprabhu's mercy.' It does not happen without great fortune...

Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami, the composer of Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, first stayed in Jhamatpur Baharan, near Katwa. (If you go to Vrindavan, you can see his samadhi-mandir is there.) He was already very old when he stayed in Jhamatpur together with his brother. His brother's name is not mentioned anywhere (scriptures write only about devotees). One day, his brother arranged for some sahajiya kirtan at their home and told a brahman called Gunarnava Misra to do the puja. Gunarnava Misra did not like Nityananda Prabhu (he did not like His style of dressing, behaviour, and so on), so he only worshipped Gauranga Mahaprabhu. When Nityananda Prabhu's servant Ramdas Minaketan came there, Gunarnava Misra did not show any respect to him – he did not offer him a seat, he did not even greet him. This is how Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami's brother made a vaishnav-aparadha. But Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami himself served Ramdas Minaketan very nicely and showed him much affection. He made Ramdas Minaketan happy with his service. You can see what happens when you serve Nityananda Prabhu's devotees: Ramdas Minaketan was insulted by one brother, but he was very satisfied by the other brother, Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami, as the result of which Nityananda Prabhu also became pleased with him. Do you know what result that brought? That same night, Nityananda Prabhu appeared before Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami in a dream and told him, 'O Krishna Das! Do not stay in Jhamatpur any longer! Come to Vrindavan!' You will find this described in Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita. I also wrote about it in Nityananda-mahimamrita. Guru Maharaj and Prabhupad also told about it.

If you remember, I told you today that Mahaprabhu said:

মদিরা যবনী যাদি নিত্যানন্দ ধরে ।
তথাপি ব্রহ্মার বন্দ্য কহিল তোমারে ॥

madira yavani yadi nityananda dhare
tathapi brahmara vandya kahila tomare

'Even if Nityananda Prabhu comes drunk with a Muslim lady by His side, He is always worshippable for Lord Brahma.'

(Sri Chaitanya-bhagavata, 3.6.123)

'Only those who possess highest qualification cannot know the divine form of Nityananda Prabhu if they have little fortune.'

alaukika yeba kichhu dekha tana
tahate adara karile pai trana

'When you come across some supramundane attraction, you must give your affection there, then you can get liberation.'

Nityananda Prabhu is supramundane; and we must love Him.

He sent Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami, an elderly brahman, to Vrindavan:

আরে আরে কৃষ্ণদাস, না করহ ভয় ।
বৃন্দাবনে যাহ,—তাঁহা সর্ব্ব লভ্য হয় ॥

are are krsnadasa, na karaha bhaya
vrndavane yaha,—tanha sarva labhya haya

'Listen, listen, Krishna Das! Do not be afraid. Go to Vrindavan – you will attain everything there.'

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 1.5.195)

Guru Maharaj spoke about this in his lecture, and you can also find this described in Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita. We have recently reprinted (Bengali) Nityananda-mahimamrita, you can find these things described in it, too. You will also find there what Srila Prabhupad Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur said about Nityananda Prabhu. This book contains very beautiful lectures. You should get this book, and you will see how nice it is.

adadanas trnam dantair idam yache punah punah
srimad-rupa-padambhoja-dhulih syam janma-janmani

'Holding grass between my teeth, I beg again and again: "May I birth after birth become dust at the holy lotus feet of Srimad Rupa."'

'I shall have no other ambition than to be the transcendental dust of Sri Rupa Goswami Prabhu only...' Taking shelter in submissive devotion to the followers of Sri Rupa Goswami, everyone including even Adideva attains mercy of Lord Govinda.

You should read this book or listen to this book read, you will get supreme benefit.

Following the order of Nityananda Prabhu, Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami came to Vrindavan, and it was there that he composed Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita. He lived in Vrindavan and got service there. How did he attain all this? He served and satisfied Nityananda Prabhu's servitor, and as the result, Nityananda Prabhu became very pleased. You must always remember this.

Odds and Ends
'When you say 'Haribol', 'Haribol' comes to their ears—this is what kindness to others is.'

When you do service, happiness and satisfaction always come, no tiredness comes; but when you go to serve maya, that time tiredness comes.
