(3/8) Pure Eyes of Pure Hearts
His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
When our bodies become afflicted with some disease – when we feel pain in our chests or any other part of our bodies – we have to see a doctor. We were singing in one of the kirtans:
হৃদয় পীড়িত যা'র কৃষ্ণ চিকিৎসক তার
hrdaya pidita ya'ra krsna chikitsaka tara 'If you have a problem with your heart, Krishna is the doctor for you. He is very good at removing heart disease (lust).' (Sri Kalyan-kalpataru, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur) Krishna is the doctor that treats the disease of the heart (bhava-roga). When we feel sick, we always go to see a doctor to make sure it is not something serious; in the same way, when we become afflicted with lust, anger, greed, illusion, madness, envy, ego, we have to find the cure. If we keep associating with devotees, all these afflictions will be subdued and we will realise, 'What I am doing is wrong.' When we again and again hear devotees say during their lectures, 'This is bad', 'This is not right', then we will gradually remove those unwanted habits from our lives. This is how we can get supreme benefit in our lives. Always remember these things. We still have some time now, so I will chant a few kirtans now and after that speak more for another half an hour or so. You must remember this day. Today is Nanda Maharaj's ananda-mahotsav. On this day, Nanda Maharaj got a son, and he distributed 100,000(!) cows among brahmans. Can you imagine that? He gave 100,000 cows as charity to brahmans on the occasion of his son's birth. And when Lord Krishna was born, all 330,000,000 demigods (Kali, Durga, Lakshmi, Ganesh, Kartik) came to see Him. They were excited, 'Our Lord has appeared!' So many gods came down from heaven, so many gods watched from the sky and showered flowers on the ground. Nobody could understand who they were. You saw that there was so much kirtan and dancing yesterday – you cannot understand who was there singing and dancing, who came from where. It is impossible to understand this. We cannot realise who came disguised as who. So many gods and great souls come disguised as brahmans to do the abhisekh of the Lord, to take part in the fire sacrifice for the Lord. We cannot understand who actually came from where. Some come from heaven and shower flowers with folded palms, some come from all kinds of other places – thousands of Laksmis, thousands of Sivas come to pray to the Lord. But we cannot understand these things... It is impossible to see or know the Lord with these material eyes. We have internal eyes in our hearts, and it is necessary to always keep these eyes open. Who opens our internal eyes? Gurudev. We always recite this prayer:
ওঁ অজ্ঞানতিমিরান্ধস্য জ্ঞানাঞ্জনশলাকয়া ।
om ajnana-timirandhasya jnananjana-salakaya 'I offer my obeisance to Sri Guru, who has opened my eyes, which were blinded by the darkness of ignorance, by applying the anjan (potent kajol, or antimony) of knowledge upon them.' When you apply kajal around your eyes, your eyes become outlined and highlighted. In the same way, we suffer from ignorance, and gurudev removes our ignorance and opens our vision through which we can get to see the transcendental abode and the transcendental environment. I told you yesterday that until and unless gurudev appears in our hearts – until and unless we get the association of gurudev and enter into a relationship with gurudev – we will never be able to understand the appearance of Lord Krishna. First, gurudev must appear in our hearts.
