(6/8) Kamsa's Crippled Ploy
His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
After Devaki and Vasudev were released, Kamsa went back to his quarters. He summoned his generals and ministers to consult them, and they began to brainwash him, 'Why do you need to worry so much about it? The prophecy was that your sister's eighth son would kill you, but that eighth girl said that your enemy had already been born. If He who is to kill you has been born this week, then just kill all the children born this week!' Those who have no faith in God have no faith in brahmans, truth or any religion. Those who are born in sin live their lives in sin, and when they hear some sinful advice or about some sin, their sins increase even more. Such people have no fear of sin. So, Kamsa's people unleashed their hatred towards brahmans – they started killing them and their cows. When Kamsa tried to kill Devaki's eighth child, the baby girl, she suddenly went up in the air and spoke another prophecy, 'He who will kill you already lives in Gokula.' This is how it happened. At first, Devaki tried to plead with Kamsa, 'Dear brother, O great Kamsa Mahasay, please do not kill this girl. This is my last child, please spare her.' But, no matter how much she pleaded with him, sinful Kamsa did not budge. He pushed Devaki aside and grabbed the girl from her hands. He held the girl by the legs and hurled her against a wall like a club, but the girl did not hit the wall – instead, she went up in the air and assumed an eight-armed form adorned with eight weapons. It was Yogamaya. She spoke then, 'Listen, wicked Kamsa, why did you try to kill me? You do not need to hate me. Your enemy has already been born.' Saying this, Mahamaya left. When Kamsa heard her words, he suddenly became concerned, 'Oh, I have been keeping my sister in prison all this time, but what did that girl say? He who is to kill me is already there, living in some other place?' Then, he started apologising to Devaki. Kamsa was quite bewildered – he could not get his head around what had happened. Much happened after that. Kamsa committed so many offences and atrocities, he tried to kill Krishna so many times... If we were to read from Srimad Bhagavatam now, it would take a very long time and you would not also be able to understand the Sanskrit verses, but this book describes these pastimes in a short way. We heard about Krishna's appearance in detail yesterday; now let us hear about the grand joyous festival that Nanda Maharaj arranged for his son Krishna. They made so many preparations – pitha (sweetmeats), pana (various drinks), milk, yoghurt, curd. He also distributed 100,000 cows to brahmans. Listen now to the description of that festival. We do not have much time left now, but we can listen about it for as long as there is time. I have told you before that Srimad Bhavagatam was a lecture that Sukadev Goswami, Vyasadev's son or disciple, spoke in front of Pariksit Maharaj during seven days. Pariksit Maharaj learned that he was to die within seven days. Everybody told him, 'You are the king, so you must divide your kingdom among your family.' What do common people do when they learn that they are going to die? They call their children and divide all their property and wealth among them. So, Pariksit Maharaj's ministers started to give him all this wrong advice. The actual advice should be to think about what will become of you after your death. This is what is necessary to think about. Whether you die today or in seven days or seven years, does anybody think what will become of them after their death? Nobody does. But Pariksit Maharaj was not like that. He told his ministers, 'You can deal with all these things – what will that give me if I get involved with all these matters? It is a waste of time! I do not want to waste a second. I have got these seven days, so I want to listen about God during this time.' This is how Pariksit Maharaj ended up only listening to Sukadev Goswami during those seven days. He listened only to Krishna-katha during all those seven days, without even touching water. But we cannot manage to hear Hari-katha for even five hours – we get tired and sleepy. All of us are like that, even me. But Pariksit Maharaj stayed focused all seven days – he did not go to the bathroom, did not eat or drink anything; he only listened about the Lord during all those days.
