It is necessary to have service mood.

তদ্­বিদ্ধি প্রণিপাতেন পরিপ্রশ্নেন সেবয়া ।
উপদেক্ষ্যন্তি তে জ্ঞানং জ্ঞানিনস্তত্ত্বদর্শিনঃ ॥

tad viddhi pranipatena, pariprasnena sevaya
upadeksyanti te jnanam, jnaninas tattva-darsinah

'You will be able to attain knowledge by satisfying the divine master with submission, relevant inquiry, and sincere service. The enlightened souls who are learned in scriptural knowledge and endowed with direct realisation of the Supreme Absolute Truth will impart divine knowledge to you.'

(Srimad Bhagavad-gita, 4.34)

If you only sing kirtans without understanding their meaning, it will not give you any benefit. For example, we sing this kirtan appealing to our gurudev:

গুরুদেব!
কৃপাবিন্দু দিয়া, কর এই দাসে,
তৃণাপেক্ষা অতি দীন ।

gurudeva!
krpa-bindu diya, kara ei dase,
trnapeksa ati dina

'O Gurudev! Please give a drop of your mercy and make this servant very humble, humbler than a blade of grass.'

You say, 'Gurudev, I am lower than a blade of grass. Even if you put your foot on me or kick me, I will not say anything,' but if somebody says something to you, you get enraged and hit the person back. What is this? You behave like that but say, 'I am lower than a blade of grass'! That means that you are lying.

সকলে সম্মান, করিতে শকতি,
দেহ নাথ যথাযথ ।

sakale sammana, karite sakati,
deha natha yatha-yatha

'Master! Give me the strength to give everyone appropriate honour.'

'May I learn to give honour to everybody. May I learn to love and respect everyone. Dear Gurudev, please give me such power.'

তবে ত’ গাইব, হরিনাম সুখে,
অপরাধ হবে হত ॥

tabe ta’ gaiba, hari-nama sukhe,
aparadha habe hata

'Then I will happily chant the Holy Name and all my offences will be destroyed.'

'Then I will chant the Holy Name happily and my offences will go away.'

শক্তিবুদ্ধিহীন, আমি অতি দীন,
কর মোরে আত্মসাথ ॥

sakti-buddhi-hina, ami ati dina,
kara more atmasatha

'I have no strength, no intelligence, I am very poor. Please hijack me!'

'Please hijack me! Steal me and take me away! Please take me out of this illusory world and use me for the service of Sri Sri Radha-Govinda – make me worthy of Their service. May I become your eternal exclusive servant and live following you – may I become worthy of your service.' We must always think like this.

Anyhow, I have spoken much today. But then, even if I speak the whole day and night, it is not possible to say everything. Try to remember and follow these things.

Who is qualified to chant kirtan? You can remember Lord Siva and how he accepted exclusive submission to gopis, so much so that even Lord Krishna Himself called Him Gopeswar ('Master of gopis'). To this day, Gopeswar Mahadev stays next to Vamsivat, where rasa-lila takes place in Vrindavan. Krishna told him, 'You should not stay at the rasa-sthali, but stay nearby, do not leave Vrindavan.' When Lord Siva came there, Radharani left the rasa dance because Her pride (mana) was hurt. She thought, 'I am Gopeswari, so how can this new gopi come and become Gopeswar just like that?' She felt angry and went to a pond a little far from the place. This is how the pond got its name Man Sarovar.

What comparison can there be between the things of this world and that world? Who will you tell these things? Who will you explain these things to? Just imagine that the Supreme Lord is a simple young cowherd walking along the banks of the Yamuna!
