(9/10) Burning Burden
His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
It is said in Srimad Bhagavatam:
সাধবো হৃদয়ং মহ্যং সাধূনাং হৃদয়ন্ত্বহম্ ।
sadhavo hrdayam mahyam sadhunam hrdayam tv aham 'Pure devotees are always in My heart, and I am always in the hearts of pure devotees. They do not know anything except Me, and I also do not know anything except them.' (Srimad Bhagavatam, 9.4.68) The Lord says, 'I live in sadhus' hearts, and sadhus also live in My heart. Sadhus do not know anything except Me.' [Somebody's phone rings.] Everybody has a mobile phone these days... Do you know Krishna's mobile number? Devotee: There is a fire. Where? Devotee: In Uluberia, a bus was burnt. Another devotee: In Kolkata also. It is all Muslim people's doings. So what? Let it burn. Ultimately, everything will be burnt and finished one day. Krishna says, 'I will always be there. I was, I am, and I will always be there. When everything is destroyed, I tell Brahma to create the world again.' So, what is the big deal? Let it all burn. What did Srila Prabhupad say? 'You have got the news that there is a fire at home? Do not worry. You do not have to go there to save it – let it burn. Stay here.' These are not my words – these are Srila Prabhupad's words. I heard they vandalised the train station in Uluberia yesterday and threw stones at the Coromandel Express train going to Chennai. Do not worry about all this. Stay here. You do not need to worry about your meals and room here. I will also stay as long as I can and speak Hari-katha every day. If you stay here and lose your job because of that, what is the big deal? Stay. I remember when I was going to take Gurudev to Bamunpara the day after his appearance day, I was going to take him to Nadanghat also, but they set our pandal on fire – there was also a big gate, and they burnt it, too. Nadanghat is a Muslim area... When this happened, Gurudev said, 'I will not go there!' When Nadanghat people heard it, they came and apologised. It was 1996. Gurudev told me, 'I will not go there.' Anyhow, Guru Maharaj said, 'You have heard so many things, so many material, useless talks with these ears! Having become a gross materialist attached to your hearth and home, you have been roaming around listening to all kinds of things. Lend your ear just once to listen to the holy talks emanating from the holy mouths of sadhus and see what happens. All you need to do is listen. Listen to the glorification of the Holy Name again and again, and you will see that one day it will enter inside you and clear your aural channel, then depending on how much you can grasp, you will be able to do some service.' It is necessary to listen properly. Listening is the first step. You must see a sadhu with your ears. As you listen to their discourses, you will become captivated and charmed without even realising it. That is why Srila Prabhupad called listening to Bhagavatam 'bhakti-siddhanta-sravan sadan' (a holy place for listening to devotional precepts). Coming here, you will not hear any newspapers talks, politics or any other material talks. You will only hear continuous discourses about the Lord from the holy mouths of sadhus here. Hearing these discourses, you will not want to leave. If you go outside, you can hear all kinds of stories, all kinds of news and other material talks. Do you like listening to such things? Use all your senses – your eyes, nose, ears, tongue, skin – in the service of the Lord. Why cannot you do that? You are doing so much for your family and country – you are working so hard to provide for your family all day long, and at night you enjoy your senses. You live in ignorance, but one day all your family will die – does it ever occur to you that you yourself are mortal, too? All your family, all your dear and near, have died, but do you ever think what awaits you in the future, when you leave this world, too? You are only running behind false enjoyment. Do you feel any happiness leading such a life? You are killing yourself for the sake of happiness. Material scientists and scholars do so many things, but are they getting even a glimpse of happiness? How many people live a happy life thanks to them? They only bring unhappiness and unrest. Why are we suffering so much? Because we want to eat wrong things and take medication to counteract the effect.' For example, if you have high blood sugar, the doctor will tell you not to eat any sweets, but you continue eating them and take medication. It does not work like that. You know, they gave so many sweets to me today – four rasagullas, luchis, so many cakes (patisapta and others)... I told Kamalendu Prabhu, 'Please help me out.' Rice and dal is my food. I used to love patisapta and malpua before. I ate one malpua today. [His Divine Grace laughs.] It is impossible to control your tongue. I understand that this is the greed of my tongue, but they had brought all my favourite things and kept them in front of me, so what can I do? [His Divine Grace laughs.] But I cannot eat it every day because if I eat it, my sugar goes up.
