(11/15) Do Not Live Like Outside People

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Kalarait (Kolkata), 4 December 2020, part 11
Translated from Bengali

The religion consists of three parts: kindness to other souls, taste for the Holy Name and service to Vaishnavs.

জীবে দয়া, নামে রুচি, বৈষ্ণব সেবা ।
ইহা বহি সনাতন নাহি আর ধর্ম্ম ॥

jive daya name ruchi vaisnava seva
iha bahi sanatana nahi ara dharma

'Be merciful to the souls, chant the Holy Name, and serve the Vaishnavs. Sanatan, besides this, there is no other religion.'

What does it mean to be kind to souls? It means bringing to this path the souls who have turned away from Krishna. We must bring them to this path, get them to take shelter at the holy feet of a bona fide guru and to practise Krishna consciousness.

You can turn your home into a temple. I have told you about it before. You can take shelter at the holy feet of a bona fide guru and serve the Lord. Serve the Lord every day. Wake up in the morning, do mangal-arati. Do not live like people from the outside world. According to them, the Lord must sleep until ten o'clock – what will you say? People in Kolkata do like that. They go to sleep at midnight and sleep until nine–ten o'clock in the morning. This is all bad habits! It is not right to live or behave like that. You must go to bed early, not later than ten o'clock, and wake up at four o'clock in the morning for mangal-arati. When you wake up, you must wake the Lord up, offer balya-bhoga to the Lord, do the arati, worship the Lord, then cook for the Lord and feed the Lord, then take prasad and go out to work. If you work outside, take some prasad with you. Do not eat outside food. Do you understand?

ভক্তের জিনিষ প্রভু লুটিপুটি খায়
অভক্তের জিনিষ প্রভু উলটি নাহি খায়

bhakter jinish prabhu lutiputi khay
abhakter jinish prabhu ulti nahi khay

'The Lord eats anything and everything when a devotee offers it, but the Lord does not want to take anything from a non-devotee.'

(Based on Sri Chaitanya-bhagavata, 2.9.185)

The Lord does not even took at non-devotees' things. Lord Krishna did not take Duryodhan's opulent food, but He went to Vidura's house and ate banana skin there! When Chaitanya Mahaprabhu went to Sridhar Prabhu's home, He ate his banana stems and flowers and drank from a glass with a hole. Where does Chaitanya Mahaprabhu stay? 'I stay in the kitchen of Sachi Mata, in the dance of Nityananda Prabhu, at the house of Srivas Pandit and at the house of Raghav Pandit.' When Sachi Mata cooks in the kitchen, she always only thinks about her Nimai. 'If only Nimai was here! He liked banana flowers and stem so much. He liked labra (mixed vegetables) so much...' Nimai did actually come there – He would eat what she had cooked and go away, but Sachi Mata would blame her daughter-in-law, 'I have cooked and kept the food aside. Have you eaten it?' Her daughter-in-law then would say, 'Mother, I have not eaten anything.' Later, Mahaprabhu sent Jagadananda Pandit to visit Sachi Mata and tell her, 'Go and tell Mother that she made sweets last winter, and I came there and ate everything. When Mother cooks and thinks about Me, I always come and eat what she cooks.' And Sachi Mata thought that maybe she had not offered the bhog yet or maybe her daughter-in-law had eaten it.

Always remember the Lord like this. If we start speaking about Mahaprabhu's pastimes now, we will need a lot of time.

Please come to Chaitanya Saraswat Math. I have made a new ashram in Nrisingha Palli, you can come there. We have branches in many places, in Ganga Sagar in the south, in Tarakeshwar, Nrisingha Palli, Puri, Vrindavan, Govardhan, Ekachakra Dham, Siliguri, Kandi, Ulluberia. I sometimes stay here in Kolkata, in Dum Dum Park...

First Steps in Surrender
Global answers to two global questions about surrender that can make even the boldest dreams come true.

How you can again join Krishna consciousness, how you can come to Me—that is
not your business. Leave this to Me.
