(4/15) Waiting—Not Wanting His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
When we get old, we cannot do much. It is necessary to practise Krishna consciousness from a young age. When you hear Hari-katha, when you hear these things, wasting time or waiting will not do you any good. You can find the story of Khatvanga Maharaj in Srimad Bhagavatam. He was to live only forty-eight minutes. When demigods and demons were fighting, Khatvanga Maharaj fought on the side of demigods and helped them win the battle. After the battle, demigods came to Khatvanga Maharaj and asked him, 'Maharaj, by your mercy we have got heaven back. Tell us please, which place in heaven would you like to stay in?' Khatvanga Maharaj replied, 'Later, later. First tell me how long do I have left to live?' The demigods said, 'Your life time is one muhurta.' One muhurta is a moment in demigods' calculation, but for this world, one muhurta is forty-eight minutes. So, the demigods said that Khatvanga Maharaj was to leave his body in forty-eight minutes. Khatvanga Maharaj received this news, but did Prabhu who has just passed away at this house get such a notification? He did not. Neither will any of us get it. Do you understand it? Pariksit Maharaj was notified about his death seven days ahead, but will any of you get this kind of notification? Do you think Yamaraj will come to you and hand you a notice saying, 'I am coming to you at such-and-such time'? Actually, if you wear tilaks and Tulasi neckbeads, Yamaraj cannot even touch you. That is why I tell everyone to wear Tulasi neckbeads. Some people say, 'Oh, I eat meat and fish.' If you wear Tulasi neckbeads and call the Lord, then you will not eat meat. If you want, you can do it. If somebody says, 'I cannot chant the Holy Name,' do not believe it. The problem is that people do not want to chant the Holy Name. If you do not want to chant the Holy Name, nobody can force you to chant it. If you do not say, 'Hare Krishna' yourself, nobody can say it instead of you or force you to say it. Therefore, it is necessary to have a strong desire: you must want to chant the Holy Name, and you must try to do it. During the Damodar Month, we chanted every day,

rudantam muhur netra-yugmam mrjantam '[Seeing the whipping stick in His mother's hand,] He is crying and rubbing His eyes again and again with His two lotus hands. His eyes are filled with fear, and the necklace of pearls around His neck, which is marked with three lines like a conchshell, is shaking because of His quick breathing due to crying. To this Supreme Lord, Sri Damodara, whose belly is bound not with ropes but with His mother's pure love, I offer my humble obeisances.' (Damodarastakam, Satyavrata Muni) Mother Yasoda tied Krishna with a rope. When she first tried to do it, she could not do it because no matter how much rope she brought, all rope was two fingers too short. She brought more and more rope feeling determined, 'I will tie Him!' She thought of Krishna as her son, not as of the Supreme Lord. Such is the transcendental mood of the gopis, and this mood is the highest. You will not find this kind of mood anywhere in Ramayana or Mahabharata. It can be found only in the pastimes of Lord Krishna (Krishna-lila).

ye yatha mam prapadyante, tams tathaiva bhajamy aham 'Howsoever people surrender to Me, I accordingly reward them. Being the ultimate goal of all paths, I am the objective to be attained by all. O Partha, all men follow My various paths.' (Srimad Bhagavad-gita, 4.11) There is santa-, dasya-, sakhya-, vatsalya- and madhura-rasa. All of these transcendental moods, especially madhura-rasa, are only found in Krishna's pastimes. Krishna's pastimes of the highest sweetness (madhurya-lila) are not found in Kali-yuga because Gaura-lila that happens in Kali-yuga are the pastimes of magnanimity (audarya-lila). In Kali-yuga, Krishna steals the heart (mood) and halo (bodily colour) of Srimati Radharani. Radharani loves and worships Krishna very much, so Krishna takes Her devotional mood and Her golden colour and becomes Gauranga. Is there anything else in a person besides their heart and halo? There is. Gadadhar is what is left of Radharani. That is why it is said that Gadadhar is the incarnation of Radharani in Kali-yuga. You may wonder that if Gauranga is a combined form of Radha and Krishna, then how is it that Gadadhar is the incarnation of Radharani? This is the answer, I have just told you. Krishna takes only the heart and halo of Radharani and becomes Gauranga, and Gadadhar takes whatever is left of Radharani after that.

krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam sangopangastra-parsadam 'Intelligent people engage in sankirtana-yajna (congregational chanting of the Holy Name) to worship the Lord on whose lips the Holy Name of Krishna dances, whose complexion is black but garbed in golden lustre, and who comes together with His associates and weapons.' (Srimad Bhagavatam, 11.5.32) Gauranga Mahaprabhu comes with all His associates, just as when we come, we do not come alone – we bring devotees with us...
