(1/9) Spiritual Conscience His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
mukam karoti vachalam pangum langhayate girim 'The dumb can speak, the lame can climb a hill—all it takes is mercy from Gurudev." (Bhavartha Dipika) First, I am offering my full obeisance at the lotus feet of my Divine Master Om Vishnupad Jagad-guru Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj, begging him for his causeless mercy and aspiring to serve him; after that, I am offering my full obeisance to all the assembled guru-varga, all my godbrothers, to all the listeners, to all the motherly lady devotees and all the devotees. I am offering my obeisance at your holy feet and praying for your mercy to this lowly soul.
dainya, atma-nivedana, goptrtve varana 'Humility, self-submission, accepting that the Lord is your maintainer, keeping faith that "Krishna will certainly protect".' (Saranagati, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur) We chanted this kirtan this morning. Who has the right to chant kirtan? Who can do kirtan? Mahaprabhu said:
trnadhika hina, dina, akinchana chhara 'Give up ego and consider yourself lower than a blade of grass, poor, destitute and vile.'
vrksa-sama ksama-guna karabi sadhana 'Practise tolerance like that of a tree, stop ill-treating others and nurture everyone.'
jivana-nirvahe ane udvega na dibe 'Live without causing anxiety to others; do good unto others forsaking your own happiness.' (Gitavali, Sri Siksastakam Giti, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur) Those who are humbler than a blade of grass, who can be more tolerant than a tree, who can give honour to others has the right, the qualification to chant Krishna-kirtan (glories and the Holy Name of Lord Sri Krishna). Therefore, if you want to practise Krishna-kirtan, you must be humble, tolerant and give honour to others. You do not practise just by singing after others.
trnadhika hina, dina, akinchana chhara 'Give up ego and consider yourself lower than a blade of grass, poor, destitute and vile.'
vrksa-sama ksama-guna karabi sadhana 'Practise tolerance like that of a tree, stop ill-treating others and nurture everyone.' (Gitavali, Sri Siksastakam Giti, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur) Giving up vengeance, you must nurture others and give honour to everybody, tolerate everything like a tree does. That is why we must always be humble. We must have faith that the Lord will protect: the Lord is the maintainer, and the Lord is the protector. We think that our parents take care of us, but this is not so. The Lord always takes care of us. If the Lord had not protected and taken care of us, we would not be sitting here now – because the Lord has protected us, we are alive now... We must always remember this. And in case you forget it, we always sing about it in the morning. There are six kinds of surrender. Unless we surrender at the holy feet of the Lord, we cannot come to His devotees.
tava nija-jana, kona mahajane, 'You have sent a great soul, Your associate, to me.' (Saranagati, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur) The Lord has sent His own associate to this world. Seeing me so fallen, the Lord's associate took pity on me and told me some good news.
tava nija-jana kona mahajane 'You have sent a great soul, Your associate (to rescue me). Seeing me so fallen and being merciful, he came to me and said, "O humble soul, listen to this wonderful message and your heart will rejoice. Sri Krishna Chaitanya has appeared in Nabadwip to deliver you."' (Saranagati, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur) To rescue you, to save you, Sri Krishna Chaitanya has appeared in Nabadwip! We must always remember this. This age is full of dangers and fighting – it is very difficult to come to the Lord in this age, but the Lord has made such a wonderful arrangement. In Satya-yuga, people lived 100,000 years and practised meditation. In Treta-yuga, they lived 10,000 years and practised fire-sacrifices (asvamedha-yajna, rajasuya-yajna, etc.) to reach the Lord. In Dvapar-yuga, the lifetime was 1,000 years, and they practised Deity worship to try to attain the Lord. But in Kali-yuga, people are restless and fickle, their minds cannot focus on anything. Thinking about the plight of the Kali-yuga souls, the Lord comes as Sri Krishna Chaitanya. One day, while meditating in Imlitala, Krishna thought:
শ্রীরাধায়াঃ প্রণয়মহিমা কীদৃশো বানয়ৈবা-
sri-radhayah pranaya-mahima kidrso vanayaivasvadyo '"What is that great glory of Sri Radha's love? What is My extraordinary loving sweetness and charm that Sri Radha enjoys? And what is the joy Sri Radha feels by experiencing My sweetness and charm?" Yearning to taste these three sentiments, the moon—Krishna-chandra—was born from the ocean of the womb of mother Sachi.' (Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 1.1.6) 'Why does Radharani cry chanting My Name? What happiness does She feel when She is serving Me?' – desiring to taste this ecstasy, Supreme Lord Sri Krishna comes in this Kali-yuga as Gauranga Mahaprabhu, a combined form of Sri Sri Radha-Krishna. Going house to house, He told everyone:
জীব জাগ, জীব জাগ, গোরাচাঁদ বলে ।
jiva jago, jiva jago, gorachanda bale 'Sri Gorachand says, "Wake up, souls! Wake up! How much longer will you sleep in the lap of the witch Maya?"' (Sri Gitavali, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur) 'O jiva! Wake up! Stop sleeping! How long will you carry on sleeping in the lap of Witch Maya? Worship Krishna!'
nija achari' dharma jivake sikhaya 'First follow the instruction yourself, then teach others. If you do not practise what you preach, your preaching will not work.' Mahaprabhu taught everyone to practise Krishna consciousness by showing His own example. It is necessary to practise. In this Age of Kali, people will not want to practise Krishna consciousness, but you still need to tell them forcibly: tell them again and again, try to bring them to this path by hook or by crook.
