(6/10) Sad and Foolish His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
We must establish ourselves firmly in the identity of an eternal servant of the Lord (Vaisnavi pratistha tate kara nistha; বৈষ্ণবী প্রতিষ্ঠা তাতে কর নিষ্ঠা). At the same time, we must never consider ourselves Vaishnavs. 'Nobody offers me obeisances', 'Nobody gives me "jay"' – it is not necessary to think about all this. If only we could take just one speck of dust from the holy abode of Nityananda Prabhu and place it on our heads! This is what we must always think about. You, like everybody in this world, do not understand Nityananda Prabhu. What do you do? When some sadhu comes to your house, you believe that you must wash his feet, and you will do it even forcefully. We do not allow anybody to wash our feet. You hear from the scriptures about the water that has washed Vaishnavs' feet, so you do everything to get it. Seeing your behaviour today, I feel very sad to see how ignorant, now foolish you are... When we went today to Nityananda Kunda, Padmavati Kunda, the Yamuna and Hatugada, we took some water from those holy rivers and ponds and placed it in our mouths or on our heads, but I saw that many of you go to bath there. We have no lack of bathrooms. What did you go there for? To wash your sins away? Not knowing anything, you go there to take bath... Many also go to take bath in the Ganges. Before you even enter the Ganges, you must offer your obeisances. When we come to the Yamuna, we offer her our obeisances and always worry that her water may not touch our feet. This is not what Srila Prabhupad taught us. He never went to any ghat at the Ganges to take bath. Gaura-hari went there and did that, but He is the Lord Himself, He can do it. We must not imitate what the Lord does – we must follow what the Lord says. You go to take bath in the ponds where we come to take some drops of water and place them into our mouths or on our heads. You think, 'If I take a bath in this pond, all my sins will be removed.' That means that you give all your sins to the pond! You have desires. You want your sins to go away. But do you think that your sins go away just by washing your bodies? Sins spring from your minds and hearts – but do you wash your minds and hearts? Do you think you can clean your hearts just by taking a bath? Your hearts are full of desires for money, women and fame, full of lust, anger, greed, madness, illusion and envy, full of desires to enjoy with your eyes, tongues, noses, ears and skin, sick with ignorance, false identification, misdirected love, aversion to anything that goes against your enjoyment and inability to give up unfavourable habits. Your hearts are usurped by all these enemies and diseases that are now sitting in them, controlling them! How can you remove them? How can you become cured of your heart disease? 'Prasada-seva karite haya, sakala prapancha-jaya (প্রসাদ-সেবা করিতে হয় সকল প্রপঞ্চ জয়). By honouring the Lord's prasad I conquer all worldly illusions' (Saranagati, 31.5). You must serve prasad (honour prasad), you must serve devotees, sadhus, chant Hari-kirtan, then your hearts will become clean! We have lived covered in rust for a very long time. Just as magnet cannot attract a rusty piece of iron (it is necessary to scrub and clean the iron, then the magnet will attract it), Krishna also cannot attract us because for such a long time – life after life, life after life! – we have been born as all kinds of species in which we could not remember the Lord, and even now, when we have got this human birth, we still cannot chant the Holy Name of the Lord. How many people come to this holy land of Sri Nityananda Prabhu? Now somebody knows there is a temple here, so people come, but before that, they did not even know about Ekachakra's existence – they only knew 'Jay Ma Tara! Maine bara! (Glory to Mother Tara! May my wealth increase!)' They expect Ma Tara to do everything for them. I have heard and seen people do this. I go to Rampurhat all the time to buy things for the Lord. People drink liquor there. There are big hotels now in Rampurhat, and people come to enjoy there. It is not necessary to go into detail. This is how people live in this world. Nobody thinks about Nitai, about Gaura. That is our sadness, and this sadness is killing us... If only people chanted Nitai's and Gaura's glories, if only they thought about the Lord, they would live so happily now. I have written a chapter in Guidance 3 that is called 'Is Religion the Cause of National Downfall?' Many countries say that religion has ruined their countries. I have wrote the answer to that.
