Practise Krishna consciousness, practise spiritual life, serve the Lord. That is my prayer to you all. You are staying here tolerating the austerities – many of you have not got a room or place to stay, so you are struggling, roughing it; still, you should try to think about Nitai and you will get supreme benefit.

You cannot get the Lord through any material activities, knowledge or mystic powers. You can get the Lord only through devotion. How will devotion come? Listen carefully. 'Bhaktis tu bhagavad-bhakta-sangena parijayate (ভক্তিস্তু ভগবদ্ভক্তসঙ্গেন পরিজায়তে): devotion comes through the association of devotees' (Brihan-naradiya Purana). If you associate with devotees, you will have devotion. Association does not mean eating from the same plate with a devotee or sleeping in the same bed with a devotee. Many mosquitoes do the same. Association with devotees means attentively listening to them speaking Hari-katha. Remember this.

Param Guru Maharaj Srila Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj told one very nice thing. If you have ears, you have a world of sound. For example, we have this microphone here, and it is making a loud sound. If somebody is deaf and cannot hear anything, is there any use in this microphone to them? There is not. For those who have no ears (who cannot hear anything), the world of sound has no value. In this world, there is beautiful light, sky, trees, plants, buildings, Deities, but if somebody is blind and cannot see anything, the cannot see these things. So, if you have eyes, you can see a world of visual objects. If you have ears, you can hear the world of sound. In the same way, if you have devotion, you can see the presence of the Lord.

Param Guru Maharaj also wrote that certain groups say, 'Oh, you can buy beads at the market and chant the Holy Name on them.' What for? You can just chant with your mouths. When you see a homeopathic doctor, he prescribes medication that is sold in globules that look like sago balls. You can also go to the market and buy globules at the market – empty globules taste very sweet – but will it cure your disease? It will not. Doctors add medicine into globules. In the same way, when gurudev chants on beads, he plants a seed of devotion in them, and when you chant on such beads, you will benefit. How can you chant on beads without first getting the seed of devotion? Srila Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj explains this.

Gross!
One of the grossest things a disciple can do: 'At the time of taking initiation we surrender to our Guru and promise him, 'I will serve you, I will serve your mission.' But when after that they go to another temple and do service there, they are just like a..'

We must not bargain with Bhagavan like in a grocery shop,
'I am serving the Guru, and I will get something in return.'
