(14/15) Clean Your Ears

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Bokaro, 3 December 2019, evening, part 14
Translated from Bengali

Lord Brahma told in Sri Brahma-samhita, 'Those who say that they know the Lord, may know Him, but I do not know Him.' Lord Brahma says, 'I have not been able to know Him,' but in our country many people say, 'I know God, I have understood many things!' Even if you try to explain anything to them, they think that they know too much – they know so much that even if you try to explain anything to them, it all just flows out, nothing gets to them.

I often tell this story. There was once a sadhu who stayed in his house and chanted the Holy Name. He would cook, offer bhoga and take prasad. One day, a man came to that sadhu to get some knowledge (he wanted to test the sadhu). He came to the sadhu's house and sat on a chair, putting one leg over the other and swinging it in the air. He said, 'Hey, sadhu, what are you doing? Come and give me some knowledge!' The sadhu thought, 'What knowledge does he want from me? He is sitting on my chair and swinging his leg here...' What did he do then? He brought a glass of water and gave it to the man, and then he brought another glas of water and started pouring water into the first glass that was already full of water. The water spilled and fell on the man. The man flared up, 'Are you an idiot? What knowledge will you give me? You are pouring water into a glass already filled with water!'

'Sir, I did it specially for you,' the sadhu replied.

'What do you mean?' the man asked.

'You have come to get some knowledge from me, but you are already filled with knowledge up to your head. What knowledge will you take from me? You can see that when I poured water into the glass, all the water fell out, and your head is already filled with knowledge, so what knowledge will you take from me?

It is necessary to surrender. It is necessary to have faith. If you do not have faith, what will you be able to hear? No Hari-katha will enter your ears. No Hari-katha will enter your ears until and unless your hearts become clean, until and unless you are able to give your minds to what is being said. If you think about other things, even if you hear something here, it will not enter your ears. You must give your minds, you must be determined, 'I want to hear Hari-katha and chant Hari-kirtan!' Always remember this.

Always practise. The devotees here hold programmes every week – you must come and listen to Hari-katha, chant kirtans. Practise makes perfect. Learn these things. If you try to learn, if you try to practise, then one day you will be able to sing all kirtans.

Let us chant Mahaprabhu's kirtan now. Our Gurudev always sang it. I will chant now, and after that I will speak a little more. [His Divine Grace chants 'Emana durmati samsara bhitare'.]

Enthusiasm for Service:
the Yajna-Patnis
'One of the qualities that are favourable to devotion is enthusiasm. 'Oh, when will the day come? When will the day come? When will I do my service? When will I go to the temple?'—this kind of enthusiasm, utsaha, is necessary to have.'

It is very rare—but if you follow properly, you can be a proper devotee.
