(10/11) Subjugate Six Faults His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
So, vacho-vegam means speech. Mano-vegam means the urge of the mind. One day, our Param Guru Maharaj told our Gurudev, who was just seventeen or eighteen years old, 'Follow what I will say, do not listen to what your mind says.' Gurudev agreed. In those days, the situation at the temple was not so good – they would cook mostly dal and rice and manage somehow. That was 1948 – we were not even born at that time. So, one day after that conversation, Param Guru Maharaj was pacing up and down his veranda, chanting the Holy Name on his beads. In the morning, devotees would take muri and those who ate more would take the rice and dal (or some vegetables, if there were any at the temple) kept from the previous day. When Gurudev was given some rice and dal one morning, he saw that there were some insects in the dal (they must have forgotten to cover the dal, so the insects got into it), but he took the insects out and ate it, mixing it with rice. Srila Sridhar Maharaj saw it. He told Gurudev, 'Gaurendu, come to talk to me after you finish taking prasad.' 'Guru Maharaj, you wanted to say something?' Gurudev asked when he came into Param Guru Maharaj's room. 'Why did you eat that dal with insects?' 'I thought at first that I did not want to take it, but you told me not to listen to my mind. That is why I at it.' Then, Srila Sridhar Maharaj understood, 'Very good! This boy will listen to me' and promised, 'This boy will become the next successor. He will listen to what I say.' This happened within seven days after Gurudev came to the temple. Gurudev received Guru Maharaj's mercy. It is necessary to be humble. Do not be fickle-minded. You must always be very tolerant, do not be fickle or restless. It is a bad quality to be fickle-minded. So, there is vacho-vegam (the urge of speech), jihva-vegam (the urge of the tongue), mano-vegam (the urge of the mind), udara-vegam (the urge of the stomach), upastha-vegam (the urge of the genitals) and krodha-vegam (the urge of anger). So, we were singing, 'Please subjugate the six urges and rectify the six defects (chhaya vega dami' chhaya dosa sodhi'; ছয় বেগ দমি' ছয় দোষ শোধি).' What are the six defects, of faults? These are the obstacles to devotion: (1) Atyahara: eating too much. Somebody invites you to a festival, and you think, 'Oh, nice! I will get to eat paneer!' I do not even touch paneer: even when I see it, I do not even touch it. Do you know what they do when they distribute prasad? Those who distribute prasad keep some paneer aside for themselves in case there would be no none left. We sing in a kirtan:
তব নিজ-জন প্রসাদ সেবিয়া
taba nija-jana prasada seviya 'Every day I will with great joy have whatever remnants Your devotees leave behind after honouring Your prasad.' (Saranagati, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur) And what do we do? When we give prasad to others, we think, 'Let me keep some paneer aside so that I can have it later; otherwise, there will be none left.' I have seen this. This is atyahara – eating too much. (2) Prayascha means hoarding too much, endeavouring too much. 'I want more!' You had no house before, but now that you have a single-storey house, you are thinking how to make a two-storey house. 'How can I get more money?', 'I want more!', 'I want more!' You know that the government has been distributing wheat to people – if they give somebody five kilograms, the person will come the next day and ask for ten kilograms, and if they get only two kilograms, they start fighting. But what do devotees, what do the guru and Vaishnavs give? They distribute the Holy Name – by getting this Holy Name, you will have no other desires. In short, prayascha means being very enthusiastic to do what goes against devotion. (3) Prajalpa means wasting time. You sit at the tea stall and tell each other stories, wasting your time. You work the whole day in the field, and after work you go to the market square and waste your time gossiping with others or watch TV. They only tell lies on TV – one party is swearing the other, and the other party is swearing the first party. There is nothing else there. Devotees do not do this – they want to talk about others' good qualities. Everybody has faults, but everybody also has some good qualities. Speak about others' good qualities, do not speak about anybody's bad qualities. You have seen somebody steal prasad – they eat it and incur sin; but if you talk about it, your fault is bigger, you will be committing an offence then. Therefore, do not speak about it. Who are you to say that somebody has stolen something or has eaten something? You have no right to talk about these things. There is already somebody who judges everything, and you if you pass judgements, then you are bypassing Him. Somebody is stealing? Let them. So you think that anybody can make the Lord poor by stealing something? Somebody steals ten rupees from the Lord, but can the Lord ever become empty? No. It is those who steal that will be finished off.
গ্রাম্যকথা না শুনিবে, গ্রাম্যবার্ত্তা না কহিবে ।
gramya-katha na sunibe, gramya-varta na kahibe 'Do not listen to village talks, do not speak about village news. Do not eat fancy food, do not wear fancy clothes. Do not expect honour to yourself and give all respect to others. Always chant the Holy Name of Krishna and serve Radha-Krishna in your mind.' (Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 3.6.236-237) Prajalpa means talking nonsense and wasting time. What do ladies do at home? They wake up in the afternoon, cook something in the evening and start talking whose daughter-in-law or mother-in-law did what. They gossip about others and criticise others. (4) Niyamagraha having no enthusiasm to do what is related to devotion, but having more eagerness towards the activities that are against, or have no relation to, devotion. (5) Jana-sangha means associating with anybody other than devotees. It is necessary to keep good association. With whom? With pure devotees. Always associate with pure devotees, always see the association of pure devotees. (6) Laulancha means fickle-mindedness. 'This is good' or 'This is bad' – you cannot decide; or you decide something and then change your mind. Param Guru Maharaj often said that the function of the mind is to accept and to reject.
