(6/11) Mahaprabhu's Teachings His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
dainya, atma-nivedana, goptrtve varana '(1) Humility, (2) self-submission, (3) accepting that the Lord is your maintainer, (4) keeping faith that “Krishna will certainly protect”, (5) engaging only in what is favourable to devotion, (6) rejecting what is unfavourable to devotion. Lord Krishna hears the prayers of those who surrender in these six ways.' (Saranagati, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur) The first limb of surrender is humility. Who did Mahaprabhu say can chant the Holy Name? Who has the right to chant the Holy Name? Do you know whom Mahaprabhu gives this right?
trnadhika hina, dina, akinchana chhara 'Give up ego and consider yourself lower than a blade of grass, poor, destitute and vile.'
vrksa-sama ksama-guna karabi sadhana 'Practise tolerance like that of a tree, stop ill-treating others and nurture everyone.'
jivana-nirvahe ane udvega na dibe 'Live without causing anxiety to others; do good unto others forsaking your own happiness.' (Gitavali, Sri Siksastakam Giti, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur) You all know that there are eight verses (siksa-astaka) spoken by Mahaprabhu. The third of these verses is this:
তৃণাদপি সুনীচেন তরোরিব সহিষ্ণুনা ।
trnad api sunichena taror api sahisnuna 'One who is humbler than a blade of grass, more forbearing than a tree, who gives due honour to others without desiring it for himself, is qualified to always chant the Holy Name of Krishna.' (Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 3.6.239) Those who are humbler than a blade of grass (who always stays low, who has no ego), more tolerant than a tree and who can give honour to others can chant the Holy Name. Humbler than a blade of grass means those who always stay low, who have no ego, who feel, 'I do not know anything', 'I do not understand anything.' Those who have these qualities (humility, tolerance, giving honour to others) have the right to chant the Holy Name. If you have such qualities and chant the Holy Name, then it will be the real Holy Name; otherwise, it will not be the Holy Name. Only those who are humbler than a blade of grass, more tolerant than a tree and who can give honour to others can chant the Holy Name. When anybody paid an obeisance to Srila Prabhupad, he would say, 'I am your servant (daso 'smi).' He paid his obeisance even to his disciples. When anybody pays an obeisance to me, I also think in my mind, 'I am your servant (daso 'smi).' Mahaprabhu taught that we must be humble, tolerant and give honour to others. There is no comparison between His teachings and any other teachings in this world. In this world, people worship Durga, Kali, Laksmi and say, 'Make me rich (dhanam dehi)', 'Make me clever (vidyam dehi)', 'Make me beautiful (rupam dehi)', 'Give me a good wife (bharyam dehi)', 'Make me a great poet (kavitam sundarim dehi)'. People want wealth, followers, a nice girlfriend. But Mahaprabhu said:
na dhanam na janam na sundarim kavitam va jagadisa kamaye 'I do not want wealth, I do not want followers, I do not want beautiful women, I do not want to be a poet. I only want causeless devotion to Your lotus feet. Give me that kind of devotion to Your lotus feet so that I could serve You life after life.' (Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 3.20.29)
dhana jana ara, kavita-sundari, "When will I declare that I do not desire wealth, followers, erudition, beautiful women, or any other bodily pleasure? O Gaurahari! Birth after birth, please give me unconditional devotion to Your feet." (Saranagati, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur)
prabhu tava pada-yuge mora nivedana 'O Lord, I am appealing at Your holy lotus feet—I do not pray for bodily pleasure, learning, wealth, or followers. I do not pray for heaven, I do not pray for liberation, and I do not pray for any supernatural powers.' (Gitavali, Sri Siksastakam Giti, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur) We do not want even heaven. People say, 'If you do something good, you will go to heaven.' But when you go to heaven on the strength of your piety (punya), your piety will finish one day and you will have to come down from heaven. The more sins you commit, the longer you will stay in hell, and the more piety you accumulate, the longer you will stay in heaven, but when all your sins and piety finish, you will have to come back to this earth. That is why devotees say, 'We do not want heaven. We want neither hell or heaven. We do not even want to achieve liberation.' Devotees put their foot on the head of Mukti Devi (liberation) and go down the path of devotion. Liberation means merging into the Lord, and devotees do not want that. Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur's words in this verse are very beautiful.
kita janma hau yatha tuya dasa, 'May I be born even as an insect, as long as I can be Your servant – I have no wish to be born as Brahma, averse to You.' (Saranagati, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur) 'I do not want to become Brahma! Even if I am born as an insect, I do not mind it as long as I can be Your servant. Even if I am born as a dog, I pray to be born as a dog at the house of Your devotee.' This is what Mahaprabhu taught. Only saying, 'Mahaprabhu, Mahaprabhu' will not do.
“গোরার আমি, গোরার আমি” মুখে বলিলে নাহি চলে ।
"gorara ami, gorara ami" mukhe balile nahi chale 'Just saying, "I am Gora's! I am Gora's!" does not do. Only when you follow Gora's practices and Gora's conception will you get the proper result.'
loka dekhana gora bhaja tilaka matra dhari' 'You put on tilaks and show the whole world that you serve Gora, but secretly you do outrageous things. Gora will catch you, thief (hypocrite)!' (Sri Sri Prema-vivarta, 8.6–7) You cannot hide anything from Gora. Do not worship Gora only to impress others. 'I have become converted!', 'I am chanting kirtan!' – people practise Krishna consciousness to show off. Such practice brings no result. Mahaprabhu said:
na dhanam na janam na sundarim kavitam va jagadisa kamaye 'I do not want wealth, I do not want followers, I do not want beautiful women, I do not want to be a poet. I only want causeless devotion to Your lotus feet. Give me that kind of devotion to Your lotus feet so that I could serve You life after life.' (Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 3.20.29) 'I do not want all these things!'
