Sanatan-Siksa: His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
[His Divine Grace is reading from Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Madhya-lila, chapter 22:]
Where there is Krishna, it is the compared to the sun, and where there is Maya, it is compared to darkness. Where there is Krishna, there is no darkness—darkness has no right to be there.
We must surrender, "Krishna, I am Yours! I am Your servant!" It means, "I am your goat: You can cut my tail, neck, head, leg, or anything You want, that is Your business. I have surrendered to You, and I am giving everything (my body, my mind, my heart) to You, and it is up to You now to decide what You will do with me—it is up to You what You will do with my body, what You will do with my mind, and what You will do with my heart. You have given me hands to do Your service; You have given me eyes to see Your form, and so on. I am giving everything to You." We must say this from our heart, without hypocrisy or deceit,
লোক দেখান গোরা ভজা তিলক মাত্র ধরি ।
loka dekhana gora bhaja tilaka matra dhari' "You show the world you serve Gora simply by wearing tilak but secretly you misbehave. Gora will catch you, you thief!" (Sri Sri Prema-vivarta, 8.7) You always say that you are Gora's devotee, but you do not follow His conception and His advice,
“গোরার আমি, গোরার আমি” মুখে বলিলে নাহি চলে ।
"gorara ami, gorara ami" mukhe balile nahi chale "Just saying, 'I am Gora's! I am Gora's!' does not do. Only when you follow Gora's practices and Gora's conception will you get the proper result." (Sri Sri Prema-vivarta, 8.6)
Guru Maharaj said that four kinds of people come to the Math: arta (আর্ত, the distressed), artharthi (অর্থার্থী, the poor), jijnasu (জিজ্ঞাসু, the curious), jnani (জ্ঞানী, the knowledge-seekers). Some of them want to get liberation (mukti-kami), some want to get enjoyment (bhukti-kami), some want to get some kind of opulence (siddhi-kami), but it says in this sloka that if they have some good intelligence, if they follow and practise Krishna consciousness, then they too can worship Krishna, can get to serve Krishna. If you have strong devotion to Krishna, your service can never be removed: if you have a strong common sense, strong devotion to Krishna, then you will never leave your service and your service will also never leave you, it will always be with you. One time, the pujari of a temple wanted to go to Vrindavan. He came to Gurudev and asked him, "Gurudev, I want to go to Vrindavan now." "To Vrindavan?" "Yes, Maharaj." "You are very cruel. Who will take care of your Children? Have you arranged for somebody to take care of Them?" (The Deity in the temple are like children.) "Yes I, arranged something..." "Then you can go for a few days." This is what Gurudev said. So, "gadha-bhakti-yoge tabe Krsnere bhajaya" means also if you have no devotion to Krishna, you cannot do service. Krishna bhajan means Krishna seva. Bhajan does not mean to only chant, "Krishna, Krishna" on your beads. 'Bhajan' means 'bhaj datum', seva ('bhaj' means service, 'datum' means 'giving'). If somebody asks you, "Do you do Krishna bhajan?" what will you answer? Is simply chanting on your beads Krishna bhajan? No. It is like you keep saying, "My father is good, my father is good, my father is good," but you do not give food to your father. You chant, "Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare," but you do not give food to your Bhagavan, you do not give Him clothes, you do not bathe Him, and so on. You always chant, "Gurudev, Gurudev, Gurudev," but do not give food to your Gurudev—it means externally you say, "Gurudev", but inside you do something else. So,
People come to the temple, but somebody thinks about liberation ("I can go to the temple and get liberation there"), somebody thinks about enjoyment ("Oh, I will go to the temple, there is good food, a good house, I can enjoy there very nicely"), somebody wants name and fame ("I can get opulence, name and fame there!"), but if they get good intelligence and worship the Lord, practise Krishna consciousness properly (gadha-bhakti-yoge), they too can get service to the Lord. The main thing is service—if you have no service, you have no mercy. These are Gurudev's words. Somebody asks Gurudev, "Please give me some mercy," but what is the meaning of mercy? Do you have some service? No? Then you have no mercy. If you have service, you have mercy. Remember it. Gurudev always says, "Maya is always taking our time." We have got some time, and how hard the Lord tries to engage us in His service! Mahaprabhu told all this to Sanatan Goswami, but did He tell it for him? No, Mahaprabhu told it for us. Sanatan Goswami asked, "Ke ami? (কে আমি, Who am I?)" but Sanatan Goswami knows it himself—he knows the answers to all the questions he asked ("Why am I suffering so much? What is the relief?"). Mahaprabhu said to him, "You know everything yourself—you have no bondage of Maya. I know why you are asking Me these questions. You asking them for everybody's benefit—you want to teach others. You are a perfect man and you can preach these kinds of things all over the universe..." How beautifully it is written here in Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita...
