Sanatan-Siksa:
Six Limbs of Surrender

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
24 June 2015

[His Divine Grace is reading from Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Madhya-lila, chapter 22:]

How is devotion to Krishna born?

krsna-bhakti-janma-mula haya 'sadhu-sanga'
krsna-prema janme, tenho punah mukhya anga

"Sadhu-sanga, good association, is what the devotion to Krishna is ultimately born from; even when the highest love for Krishna is born, good association remains a principle part of the devotee's life." [80]

If you want to get devotion of Krishna, you need good association—sadhu-sanga is the main root of devotion.

asat-sanga-tyaga,—ei vaisnava-achara
'stri-sangi'—eka asadhu, 'krsnabhakta' ara

"Vaishnav's etiquette is to leave bad association: keeping the company of women is one such association, and keeping the company of those who are not devotees of Krishna is another." [84]

Avoid bad association, do not associate with those who are not devotees.

eta saba chhadi' ara varnasrama-dharma
akinchana hana laya krsnaika-sarana

"Giving up all bad association, giving up adherence to social rules of varnas and asrams, thus ridding yourself of all material possessions (attachment), take exclusive shelter at the lotus feet of Krishna." [90]

You must leave everything. Whether you live a householder life, or even a brahmachari life—leave everything and only surrender to the Lord. Srimad Bhagavad-gita told,

sarva-dharman parityajya, mam ekam saranam vraja
aham tvam sarva-papebhyo, moksayisyami ma suchah

"Give up all kinds of religion and surrender to Me alone. I will liberate you from all sins, do not despair." [91]

(Srimad Bhagavad-gita, 18.66)

"Leave everything and follow Krishna consciousness, surrender to the Lord."

bhakta-vatsala, krtajna, samartha, vadanya
hena krsna chhadi' pandita nahi bhaje anya

"Krishna loves His devotees, He is always indebted to His devotees, He is omnipotent and magnanimous. No learned man would ever leave such Lord for any other kind of worship." [92]

"Krishna is bhakta-vatsal: He always lives in the devotees' heart. Krishna does not live without His devotees. So, those who do not follow Krishna are foolish; the scholarly ones always worship the Lord."

vijna-janera haya yadi krsna-guna-jnana
anya tyaji', bhaje, tate uddhava—pramana

"One is a learned person if they know about the qualities of Krishna and worship Krishna, giving up everything else. Uddhav is the evidence to that." [94]

Uddhav thought, "I live with Krishna, I look like Krishna—I am like Krishna!" Sometimes some ego came or something, but Krishna gave him mercy and he left everything and worshipped the Lord.

saranagatera, akinchanera—eka-i laksana
tara madhye pravesaye 'atma-samarpana'

"The qualities of a surrendered soul appear the same as those of a destitute soul, but the difference between them is that the surrendered soul has given itself fully to the Lord (atma-samarpan)." [96]

The surrendered souls are those who have atma-samarpan, surrender or self-submission. There are six types of surrender:

anukulyasya sankalpah pratikulyasya varjanam
raksisyatiti visvaso goptrtve varanam tatha
atma-niksepa-karpanye sad-vidha saranagatih

"Acceptance of the favorable, rejection of the unfavorable, the faith that 'He will surely protect me,' embracing the Lord's guardianship, complete dependence on Him, and the perception of one's utter helplessness without Him—these six are the essential limbs of exclusive surrender to the Lord (saranagati)." [97]

This sloka is from Sri Hari-bhakti-vilas (11.418).
1) Anukulya-sankalpa (আনুকূল্যসঙ্কল্প), we will accept what is in favour of devotion.
2) Pratikulya-vivarjana (প্রতিকূল্যবিবর্জ্জন), we will reject what is not in favour of devotion.
3) "Krishna raksa karben" (কৃষ্ণ রক্ষ করবেন), we must believe that "Krishna will protect me. No one except Krishna can protect me." Sometimes we think, "I will protect myself," "My father is protecting me," "My son is protecting me," "My relative is protecting me," "My doctor is protecting me," but no one protects you—only Krishna protects you. It is necessary to have faith in that, that is called visvas.
4) "Krishnake 'gopta' va 'palayita'" (কৃষ্ণলে 'গোপ্তা' বা 'পালয়িত'): no man, no demigod is our guardian or maintainer. It is a misconception, it is wrong to think so. Only Krishna is our maintainer.
5) Atmaniksepa (আত্মনিক্ষেপ), we are not independent (svatantra, স্বতন্ত্র), we are dependent, we live under the guidance of the Lord (paratantra, পরতন্ত্র).
6) Finally, karpanya (কার্পণ্য), or dainyata (দৈন্যতা), humility.

sarana lana kare krsne atma-samarpana
krsna tare kare tat-kale atma-sama

"When you take shelter of Krishna's lotus feet and surrender yourself to Krishna, at that time Krishna accepts you as His very own." [99]

When you take initiation, when you surrender to the Lord, Krishna thinks, "He is My son. This jiva soul is as dear to Me as My very own heart, atma-sama."

Sanatan-siksa: Krishna's Beauty
'From all Krishna's Pastimes, the best are His human Pastimes, where His form is just like that of a human being. His dress of a cowherd boy, His carrying a flute, His lasting youth and expert dancing all suit His human Pastimes very much.'

Sujanarvuda-radhita-pada-yugam
'He is the best of the paramahamsas and the guardian of the supreme wealth (Krsna-prema). He accepted the robes of a sannyasi to deliver the fallen. His feet are served by the best of the sannyasis. Eternally I offer my obeisance to my master's feet.'

People feel affection to their children, wife, relatives, and if you think that kind of relation
is coming to you towards your Guru and your Guru's mission, then you can think
that some devotion is coming to your heart...
