Sanatan-Siksa:
Awakening Taste for Service
His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
23 June 2015
[His Divine Grace recapitulates Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Madhya-lila,
chapter 22:]
I was reading the 22nd chapter yesterday in the evening, beginning from this
sloka by Srila Rupa Goswami,
kamadinam kati na katidha palita durnidesa,
tesam jata mayi na karuna na trapa nopasantih
utsrjyaitan atha yadu-pate! sampratam labdha-buddhis
tvam ayatah saranam-abhayam mam niyunksvatma-dasye
"O Lord! How many kinds of wicked orders from lust and others I followed!
They had no mercy on me, nor were they ever satisfied! O Krishna! Suddenly, I
managed to leave their side and got some good intelligence—I have
surrendered at Your fearless lotus feet, please engage me now as Your
servant." [16]
|
It means, "I am suffering so much. I have listened to Maya's
instruction—I have listened to my son, my wife, my daughter, my
friends, to anger, lust. They gave me so many bad instructions, and although
I have listened to them all, they never had any sympathy for me... Now I have
at last come to You! I have got some intelligence, good brain, and I give up
everything and surrender to You. Now You must give me some service—You
must appoint me as Your servant."
krsna-bhakti haya abhidheya-pradhana
bhakti-mukha-niriksaka karma-yoga-jnana
"Devotion to Krishna is the primary goal of life. Fruitive action (karma),
austerities (yoga), knowledge (jnana) look up to devotion (bhakti)." [17]
ei saba sadhanera ati tuchchha bala
krsna-bhakti vina taha dite nare phala
"These practices have very little power—without devotion to Krishna, they
cannot give the result." [18]
|
Krsna-bhakti haya abhidheya-pradhana: what is called abhidheya?
Abhidheya (the main things) is devotion to Krishna. Practising
karma, meditation, and other things, gives very little result—if
you have no Krishna-bhakti (devotion to Krishna), there will be no
result.
Kevala jnana 'mukti' dite nare bhakti vine: if you have knowledge and
no devotion, you will not get liberation, but if you have no knowledge and
have devotion, you will get liberation.
'krsna-nitya-dasa'—jiva taha bhuli' gela
ei dose maya tara galaya bandhila
"When the jiva soul makes the mistake of forgetting that it is an eternal
servant of Krishna, Maya captures the soul by its neck." [24]
|
We are eternal servants of the Lord, but we forget it—we forget
Krishna, that is our fault. As a result of that fault, Maya attacks us: she
puts a noose around our necks (galaya bandha).
tate krsna bhaje, kare gurura sevana
maya-jala chhude, paya krsnera charana
"When such conditioned soul worships Krishna, serves the Guru, then Maya's
net is loosened and the soul attains the lotus feet of Krishna." [25]
|
If, however, you worship Krishna, if you serve the Guru, you can become free
from Maya and get the lotus feet of the Lord.
chari varnasrami yadi krsna nahi bhaje
svakarma karileo se raurave padi maje
"Whatever varna (a priest, fighter, manager, or worker) or asram (a celibate,
householder, renouncer of the household life, or monk) you may belong to, if
you do not worship Krsna but engage in your prescribed duties, you will have
to fall into a terrible hell." [26]
|
You may be a householder, a brahmachari, a vanaprastha,
a sannyasi, a brahmin, you may belong to a high caste, lower
caste, come from a very high family, be a highly educated person, but if you
do not worship Krishna, then whatever work you do, you will go to hell. It is
told here in Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita.
krsna—surya-sama; maya haya andhakara
yanha krsna, tanha nahi mayara adhikara
"Krishna is like the sun, Maya is like darkness. Maya has no right to be
where Krishna is." [31]
|
Krishna is like the sun, and Maya is like darkness: Maya has no right to
enter where Krishna is. Where is Krishna? Krishna exists where Krishna-katha
is going on, where Krishna's beauty, Pastimes are explained. There is no
place for Maya there.
'krsna, tomara hana' yadi bale eka-bara
maya-bandha haite krsna tare kare para
"If somebody just once says, 'Krishna, I am Yours!', Krishna frees them from
the bondage of Maya." [33]
|
"I want to be Yours!"
bhukti-mukti-siddhi-kami 'subuddhi' yadi haya
gadha-bhakti-yoge tabe krsnere bhajaya
"If those who want enjoyment, liberation or some mystic powers, get good
intelligence and practise Krishna consciousness intensely, they get the
service to Krishna." [35]
|
Sometimes people come not for Krishna consciousness—sometimes they have
some other desires, like liberation, enjoyment, some kind of opulence, and so
on. If people want other things but worship devotion, then they too can get
service, can practise Krishna consciousness. In other words, you may have
joined the mission, or stay in the temple, because you have no money, or you
have no food, and so on. You may not know anything about Krishna
consciousness and have different material desires, but if you practise
Krishna consciousness properly, you can get service.
anya-kami yadi kare krsnera bhajana
na magiteha krsna tare dena sva-charana
"If somebody has some material desires but worships Krishna, Krishna gives
them His lotus feet even though they do not ask for it." [37]
|
People may not ask for the Lord's lotus feet—they stay here but think
about other things, have some material desires (anya-kami), but
Krishna out of His own will gives them His lotus feet. Krishna says, "Ama
bhaje, mage visaya-sukha: they worship Me but think about something
material—instead of nectar they ask Me for poison ('Please, give me
this, I want to die'). They are foolish, but I am intelligent—they are
My sons, why should I give them poison? I will not give them poison, instead
I will give them the nectar of My lotus feet and they will forget about all
material desires."
kama lagi' krsne bhaje, paya krsna-rase
kama chadi' 'dasa' haite haya abhilase
"Somebody wants material enjoyment and worships Krishna, but when they get
the taste of Krishna's nectar, they leave all their desires and aspire to
become a servant." [41]
|
They may have some material desire, but if they worship Krishna, they get the
sweetness, the ecstasy, the beauty of Krishna, and they think then, "What I
am tasting now is so good! I want to be a servant! I want to serve
Krishna!"
