SRI GAUDIYA GITANJALI : SPECIAL POETRY
Sri Sri Gaurasundarer Avirbhav Vasare
(On the Day of Sri Sri Gaurasundar’s Advent)
(By Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj)
aruna vasane, sonara suraja,
udichhe kena re aja
vasanta susama, ujari apana,
dhale kena jaga-majha [1]
Why today of all days has the Golden Sun appeared clad in saffron garb? Why
has the exquisitely beautiful spring poured into this otherwise void
world?
taru gulma-lata, apurva varata,
vahe kena phale-phule
bhrnga o vihange, kena hena range,
sangita taranga tule [2]
Why have all the trees, shrubs and creepers swelled with beauty at this
astonishing news? Why do bees and birds reel in joy like this, raising waves
of their music?
patita durjana, kena re garjana,
ullase phatiya pade
vidya-kula-dhana, abhimani jana,
kena mlana duhkha bhare [3]
Why do all the fallen and wretched souls explode in roar feeling this intense
joy? Why do all the people who are so proud of their knowledge, birth and
wealth look so down, filled with misery?
akasa-vatasa, ghuchaiya trasa,
asvase bhasaye deya
sadhu-jana mana, sukha vitarana,
avese unmada haya [4]
The wind in the sky clears all fears and sends a flood of reassurance. The
intoxicated, maddened hearts of saintly persons spread happiness all
around.
chaudikete dhvani, ki apurva suni,
bahu-jana uchcharola
hare krsna rama, nama divya-dhama,
hari hari hari bola [5]
What a wondrous sound is heard in all four directions, uttered by so many
people! The world has turned into a divine abode of Holy Names as ‘Hare!’,
‘Krishna!’, ‘Rama!’ are heard everywhere. Hari Hari Hari bol!
phalguni purnima, hindola rangima,
sujana bhajana rage
sankirtana sane, marama gahane,
na jani ki bhava jage [6]
Pious souls worship Phalguni Purnima, the festival of swings and colours,
with deep affection. I do not know what sort of divine mood arose in the
depths of their hearts today.
sandhya samagama, tapana magana,
kena hema-ghana kole
aparupa kata, purava parvata,
suvarna-chandrama bhale [7]
Why has the sun become so overwhelmed and immersed into an intensely golden
colour as the evening approached? How beautiful the Hill of East looks in the
rays of this Golden Moon!
suvarna-chandrama, pasichhe nilima,
se nila bilina heme
ithe kiba bhaya, sadhu-jana gaya,
kalanka na rahe preme [8]
Then, some bluish hue entered the Golden Moon, and this bluishness dissolved
into its golden colour. All saintly persons begin to chant, ‘How beautiful
this is!’ There is no blemish in this transcendental pure love!
mahajane bale, grahanera chhale,
sange nama sankirtana
gaurachandrodaya, papa rahu-ksaya,
chandra-sobha-prema-dhana [9]
The great saintly persons say that this eclipse is a mere pretext to chant
Nama-sankirtan. When Gaurachandra (the Golden Moon) arises adorned
with the wealth of divine love, He destroys all sins and inauspiciousness of
Rahu (who comes to eclipse the Moon).
marmajna sakale, kahe kutuhale,
nilima bilina chande
chhanna avatara, lukana kahara,
radha-ruchi-rupa-chhande! [10]
Those who know what is what say with jubilation that the bluish hue dissolves
within the Moon: appearing in this world in disguise (as a hidden
incarnation), Lord Krishna hides Himself within the Moon of Sri Radha’s
divine mood.
ithe hena stuti, radha-bhava-dyuti,
suvalita syama rao
udila gauranga, nama-prema sanga,
jaya jaya gora gao [11]
Such is the glory of Sri Krishna, who is adorned with Sri Radha’s heart and
halo. Gauranga has arisen along with the divine love and the Holy Name!
Please chant, ‘Jaya Jaya Gora! All glory to Gauranga!‘
