"We should always check the calendar, and when we see some dates mentioned
there, even if we do not know anything about the Vaishnav or events mentioned
there, we can at least give 'jay' to them—that also brings some good sukriti,
some purification to us. Seeing the calendar and taking devotees' names early
in the morning, from the beginning of the day, is very good for all
devotees."
"Wake up, look into the calendar and give 'jay' to your Guru and
Vaishnavs. Always pay obeisance to your Guru and Vaishnavs when you wake up
in the morning, always give them 'jay'. Always keep faith and show
respect to them. Always see the calendar—whose appearance day it is, whose
disappearance day it is. Even if you cannot make a festival, at least you can
give them 'jay', it will bring you benefit. When you give 'jay'
to your Guru and Vaishnavs, it brings you sukriti. For example, today
is the disappearance day of a Vaishnav—give 'jay' to him, remember
him. We must always remember the words of Vaishnavs. If I remember the words
of Vaishnavs, I get some benefit, some deposit through that."

'In 1468 Saka (1546 CE), Sri Chaitanya Das’s son Srinivas came to Sri
Vrindavan. Sri Gopal Bhatta mercifully gave him initiation. Srinivas Acharya
also received Sri Jiva’s mercy. He studied scriptures from him and thereby
received the title of a preacher of Vaishnavism...'
His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami
Maharaj:
"Srinivas Acharya, Narottam Das Thakur, and Shyamananda Prabhu
started for Vrindavan to have the darshan of Srila Rupa Goswami, Srila
Sanatan Goswami, Srila Gopala Bhatta Goswami, Srila Raghunath Bhatta Goswami
and others who were there.
"When they were only a few miles away from Mathura, they heard that Sanatan
Goswami had passed away. People were saying that that great Sanatan Goswami
who was the prime minister and who had captured all people in the whole of
Vrindavan within his heart—that Sanatan had passed away, a great disaster for
the country. What to do then? Rupa, Raghunath, Jiva and Gopal Bhatta were
still living, so Srinivas, Narottam, and Shyamananda dragged somehow on.
When they reached Mathura, they heard that Srila Rupa Goswami had left the
night before that. Sanatan left on an ashari purnima, and Srila Rupa Goswami
left after that on next dvadasi. They thought, "What hopeless and cursed
souls we are! We have come so near, yet we could not see those two generals
of Mahaprabhu!" Mahaprabhu sent two of His generals to Vrindavan to carry out
His orders and establish the kingdom of the Gaudiya Vaishnavs there... So,
they dragged their bodies to Vrindavan and came to Govinda Mandir. When they
reached it, they found that an evening aroti was going on there in a very
great splendour. There was a great crowd there—Srila Rupa Goswami had just
passed away, so with that feeling of high bereavement, everybody was chanting
his name madly. Srinivas, Narottam, and Shyamananda Prabhu were there, but
Srinivas Acharya could not stand that sort of sentimental wave—he was
standing aside and he fainted. When he regained his consciousness, he saw
Srila Jiva Goswami with some of his followers...
In this way, Srinivas Acharya, Narottam Das Thakur, and Shyamananda Prabhu
stayed in Vrindavan for one year—Srinivas Acharya took initiation from
Gopala Bhatta, Narottam Thakur from Lokanath Goswami, and Shyamananda Prabhu
from Srila Jiva Goswami Prabhu..."

Not Yourselves
'We worship Siva for our material desires, to fulfil our own selfish
interests. This is not real worship. Do not be like this. Do not turn gods
into your servants instead of worshipping them. You come to Lord Siva and
expect him to give you this, this, that – Lord Siva becomes your servant who
must do what you tell him to do. This is wrong.'

appearance days of all Vaishnavs. If we can remember such personalities, such
great souls, it will bring a great benefit to our spiritual life. If you
remember the glories of Vaishnavs, if you speak about the glories of
Vaishnavs, they can rescue you from all kinds of material bondage. We have
heard a hundred times that if we glorify Vaishnavs, it gives great benefit,
but even though we have heard it a thousand times, how much are we able to
glorify Vaishnavs from our heart? How much can we serve Vaishnavs with heart
and soul? This is the question."
‘I offer my obeisance unto the beautiful follower of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta
Saraswati Thakur, Srimad Bhakti Saranga Goswami Maharaj. He possesses a
radiant form, long arms and lotus eyes. He crushes the pride of the wicked

thunderbolt striking the mountain of hypocrisy. He is the sole friend of the
intelligentsia and a shining sun above the lotus of the aristocracy.’

"You should know who Srila Bhakti Saranga Goswami Maharaj is and about
our connection and relationship with him. You must remember this connection
because without the knowledge of the relationship (sambandha-jnana),
you can develop neither the knowledge of abhidheya (the means to
attain the goal) nor the knowledge of prayojana (the goal).
"Srila Bhakti Saranga Goswami Maharaj (his brahmachari name was
Sri Aprakrita Prabhu) was a prominent disciple of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta
Saraswati Thakur. When Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur entered his
eternal pastimes, Srila Bhakti Saranga Goswami Maharaj (Aprakrita Prabhu at
the time), although a very senior brahmachari preacher, left the
brahmacharya ashram and went back to his house in great distress. He
was born in a village called Patrasayer (our Betur temple is situated
nearby). After some time, Srila Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj come to Sri
Aprakrita Prabhu and said, ‘Prabhu, you are living a family life now, let it
be, but if you stay here, who will preach Mahaprabhu’s and Srila Prabhupad’s
conception in this world? You have so much qualification for service and
preaching, you must come back.’ Then, Srila Aprakrita Prabhu said, ‘If you
give me sannyas, I will leave home and my family and come back.’ Srila
Sridhar Maharaj agreed and gave him sannyas and the name Sri Bhakti
Saranga Goswami Maharaj. From that time, he came back to his preaching
services.
"Srila Goswami Maharaj began to preach in various places. Trying to
fulfil Srila Prabhupad’s earnest desire to spread Krishna consciousness all
over the world, Srila Goswami Maharaj even went to London, where he kept
preaching and, eventually, with much effort and having tolerated much
austerity, managed to open a small centre. He also has temples in Kolkata,
Jalpaiguri and other places. In his lifetime, he established twenty-four
centres in various places, among which is also the temple in Imlitala,
Vrindavan, where Krishna was sitting when He decided that He would steal
Radharani’s heart and halo and come as Gauranga Mahaprabhu.
"Srila Bhakti Saranga Goswami Maharaj always helped our Sri Chaitanya
Saraswat Math in various ways, especially during parikramas and with
collection. Later, he finally established this temple here, at the place
where the first meeting of Sri Sri Gaura Nityananda Prabhu took place. Srila
Sridhar Maharaj had come here together with Srila Goswami Maharaj to see the
land, and he gave Srila Goswami Maharaj much advice on what kind of temple to
make, on the size of the nat mandir and other aspects.
"There is much that can be said about Srila Bhakti Saranga Goswami
Maharaj. After taking sannyas in 1940, he always kept in touch with
Srila Sridhar Maharaj. Our Srila Gurudev, Om Vishnupad Srila Bhakti Sundar
Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj, said:
"‘Once, Srila Goswami Maharaj gave a very special lecture. He
explained that he and other great preachers were active in all directions,
but they all waited to see what Srila Sridhar Maharaj thought about the
quality of their preaching style. He used the phrase simha avalokana
(a lion’s glance), saying, “We are preaching over the whole world, but from
time to time we look back to see whether Srila Sridhar Maharaj is happy with
our preaching activities.” “Simha avalokana” means when a lion goes
some distance, it stops and looks behind to check the environment, then
proceeds further, then again looks behind, and so on. In this way, Srila
Goswami Maharaj described how all the preachers again and again looked
towards Srila Guru Maharaj to see if their preaching had his approval.
"‘Srila Goswami Maharaj was the dearmost disciple of Srila
Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami Thakur – Srila Saraswati Thakur depended on
his service. At the same time, although Srila Goswami Maharaj takes a unique
position in Gaudiya Mission, he was very affectionate to our Srila Guru
Maharaj. I have never seen him go against any decision of our Guru Maharaj;
we can say that he almost blindly followed whatever Guru Maharaj decided, but
he was not a blind man – he had much faith in Guru Maharaj.’
"Moreover, one year, during the circumambulation of Vrindavan, Srila
Bhakti Saranga Goswami Maharaj personally worshipped Srila Sridhar Maharaj
with one hundred and eight lamps, incense and other paraphernalia on the
occasion of Srila Sridhar Maharaj’s appearance day. Srila Goswami Maharaj
performed this function, joined by many of his disciples and other
godbrothers.
"Srila Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj was Srila Bhakti Saranga Goswami
Maharaj’s godbrother and sannyas-guru, but it is remarkable what kind
of respect he had for Srila Guru Maharaj. Every year, Srila Goswami Maharaj’s
disciples would arrange a very fine Vyasa-puja celebration on the appearance
day of Srila Goswami Maharaj, and Srila Goswami Maharaj would personally go
to Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math to invite Srila Sridhar Maharaj to come to his
temple on that day. Srila Sridhar Maharaj usually did not go to other
temples, but he would always come to Srila Goswami Maharaj’s temple (this
very temple where we are sitting now). Srila Goswami Maharaj not only invited
Srila Guru Maharaj, he would also give whatever presentations, donations or
gifts he had received from his disciples on that day to his
sannyas-guru, Srila Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj. One year, showing a
pastime of feeling unwell, Srila Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj could not come
to the festival in honour of Srila Goswami Maharaj’s appearance, and that day
Srila Goswami Maharaj said, ‘Srila Sridhar Maharaj has been coming every year
and I have been getting one more year of life, but since he could not come
this year, I think that I will not be alive next year.’ And it happened like
that – a few months later, on 26 May 1964, Srila Goswami Maharaj entered his
eternal pastimes."

AFFECTION
'If we can follow sadhu-sanga, it will give us relief from so many
things and a very good result in the future. But all depends upon
sraddha, faith. The translation of sraddha is more than just
"faith". It is actually affectionate faith. Not everyone will feel affection.
Good fortune will work in the background. With strong good fortune, one can
immediately cross over the next three stages after association with the
sadhu. But this is possible in very special cases only. Our Guru
Maharaj used the word "affection", but it is necessary for us to know the
line in which he did so.'

not know anything about the Vaishnav mentioned in the calendar, you must
still give them 'jay' on this day. We must always remember disappearance and
appearance days of all Vaishnavs. If we can remember such personalities, such
great souls, it will bring a great benefit to our spiritual life. If you
remember the glories of Vaishnavs, if you speak about the glories of
Vaishnavs, they can rescue you from all kinds of material bondage. We have
heard a hundred times that if we glorify Vaishnavs, it gives great benefit,
but even though we have heard it a thousand times, how much are we able to
glorify Vaishnavs from our heart? How much can we serve Vaishnavs with heart
and soul? This is the question."

produces an agony of swallowed poison; but, internally, it brings much joy);
He is none other than Govinda, who, coming under complete influence of Sri

Srimati Radharani, and that is their foremost qualification. Just as without

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad Srila B.N. Acharya Maharaj: "We should
always check the calendar, and when we see some dates mentioned there, even
if we do not know anything about the Vaishnav or events mentioned there, we
can at least give 'jay' to them—that also brings some good sukriti, some
purification to us. Seeing the calendar and taking devotees' names early in
the morning, from the beginning of the day, is very good for all devotees. We
must always remember disappearance and appearance days of all Vaishnavs. If
we can remember such personalities, such great souls, it will bring great
benefit to our spiritual lives."

Krishna Das-Adhikari Prabhu:
"Many do not know about the service of late Sripad Santosh Krishna Prabhu
and he himself also during his life often said that he had not been able to
become even an insignificant servant of the Math; but seeing how strong was
his attachment to the interest of the Math in the many small services he did,
it puts us to shame now. He never once even saw the accounts of his material
property; neither did he ever try to increase his wealth even by a cent; but
it is inconceivable how much this person tried, with heart and soul, to
collect and beg for the Math. Nobody ordered him, nobody encouraged him—he
took care of the Math's various paraphernalia like an expert householder of
his own accord, he would be always seen very busy with all kinds of works of
the Math; at the same time, he never once gave anyone even a slightest hint
of the service and works he was doing. Some of us help the Math's preaching
with some money, etc., give physical labour, but if we do not see any mention
about us in a newspaper column, at the preachers' assembly at a holy dham, or
in an eulogy written by Sri Guru and Vaishnavs, then we decide, 'There is no
use serving the Math. They are prejudiced. They do not praise me, do not give
me 'jay', so I better rough it at home than waste time, money and life for
the interest of the Math.' However, the great soul who we have mentioned
before, gave so much money for the service of 'Jayasri', continuously toiling
as a low menial worker—it is impossible to mention everything. However, he
never once said anything that would give a slightest hint that he wanted to
see his praise in a newspaper column or even more so to see his name included
in the Math's Calendar; but we have seen that his effort to look after the
interests of the Math was gradually making him great."

THE PLANE OF DEDICATION
'The mind, the consciousness, is being fully cleansed by the performance of
Nama-sankirtan. But cleanliness, purity, on its own is not sufficient.
When you are cleaning something, all the dirt that will come out as a result,
and you will have to do something with that. The dirty things—our mundane
wealth, our mundane conceptions, all our evil tendencies—what will we do with
them? Bhava-mahadavagni-nirvapanam—you make a fire there, and that
fire of Nama-sankirtan will burn all those things to ashes. First you
will clean your house and then you will burn all the filth accumulated there.
And then in its place you will need to establish something good.'

disaster in your lives – it is the same as death. Do not go to listen to the

you sit at home and chant yourselves simply clapping hands.'

DASA-MULA-TATTVA
'Within this one verse, which conveys the gist of the
Dasa-mula-tattva, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur has given us everything. He

consciousness. If you can read and memorise this verse, then everything will

'This process of revelation is called Guru-parampara, or
amnaya-parampara, and it is the proper channel to approach the Lord.
By hearing from a higher source, from a qualified Guru, serving him,

(2) HEART-TO-HEART TRANSMISSION
'All religion presented in scriptures is first revealed in the hearts of
rishis, munis, and sadhus. After it appears in their
hearts it is transmitted forward from heart to heart, and it later may take
the form of books. So what can we say about religion? How much can we
understand it? It is a matter of the heart. How can we feel the beauty and
understand the glory of religion if our hearts are presently as filthy as a
dustbin? Because our hearts are impure we must try to understand religion
from a clean-hearted sadhu.'
(3) THE LOTUS FEET OF SRI GURUDEV
'We must always be serious in our practice of spiritual life and serious
about the glorification of the lotus feet of Gurudev. We do not actually know
properly the position and glory of our Gurudev’s lotus feet, so we must
always be careful in glorifying him. We do not want to make any offence to
Gurudev when we glorify him because offences to Gurudev are great obstacles

(4) THE SUPREME CONTROLLER
'Everyone is always searching for the cause of everything, the central source
of all activity. The answer is Krishna: Krishna is the origin of everything,
everything transcendental and mundane. But Krishna’s position as the Supreme
Controller is more important for us to understand. We will really begin to
understand creation, existence, power, and eternity when we understand that
Krishna—Reality the Beautiful—is the Supreme Controller. Such understanding
gives us consciousness about the divine significance of beauty everywhere,
about how, why, and in which way creation is existing and moving under the
influence of beauty.'

'Srila Jiva Goswami explained that the word Bhagavan means
bhajaniya-guna-visista: He who has the most worshippable and
attractive qualities. Because Krishna has the most transcendental qualities,

'Jiva souls animate the material energy and exist at different stages

atma-jagat. Through this name we can understand that jiva souls
do not come from the material world: they are actually members of the eternal
world and have an eternal form. When the jiva souls misuse their
freedom, they enter the material nature and suffer in the bondage of
karma. When they are re-established in their natural consciousness of
eternal service to Krishna, then they transcend Maya’s illusions and feel
