Sat, 1 April 2023 (Adhivas of Srila B.S. Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj's Disappearance Festival; tomorrow is fast on Vyanjuli Mahadvadasi)

Devotees Are Devoted
'Wherever devotees go, they always chant the Holy Name of the Lord. Whatever pain, struggle or difficulty they face, they know that everything happens by the wish of the Lord. So, although he went to hell, he did not have any problem there, and he soon returned from there. The Lord protected him.'

In honour of the forthcoming disappearance festival of Om Vishnupad Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj:

Service Challenges [Part 5]
"In my life I had to do all these hard, hard, very difficult jobs, and I was always successful. Anyhow but I did it. Whether it was getting building plans approved, whether it was any other job, everything was unhampered in the end."

Gurudev's Insight [Part 6]
"I have heard and learned a lot from Gurudev. Gurudev gave me so many instructions how to maintain the temple, and Gurudev is dur-darasi—he has a great foresight. He always managed everything very tactfully."

Gurudev's Loving Affection [Part 7]
"Sri Sivananda Sen understood it, Sri Jagadananda Pandit understood it, and Srila Sanatan Goswami also realised what is called Guru and Vaishnav's blessing in the world of devotion. I myself realised and understood it gradually too."

Nurturing Gurudev's Mission [Part 8]
"You cannot become a disciple just by taking a mantra from a guru. It is necessary to have and show your love, affection for your Guru, to take him as your own. If you care for and think about your Guru and Vaishnavs, then your Guru and Vaishnavs will care for and think about you..."

Sun, 2 April 2023 (Om Vishnupad Srila B.S. Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj's Disappearance Festival; fast on Vyanjuli Mahadvadasi)

Lord Is Always Merciful
'The Lord is always merciful to us. He is always with us. We must always remember this. Never forget this. You always forget everything – you are the soul who are forgetful of Krishna. I have mentioned the pastime of the demoness Putana today...'

"I offer my obeisance unto him who perfectly fulfils his Gurudev's most cherished desires; who is fully adorned with the blessings of his Gurudev’s associates; who is expert in all aspects of Vedic knowledge, both conceivable and inconceivable; who is the pre-eminent follower of Srila Rupa Goswami Prabhu's line; who is known as 'Govinda'—Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj; whose beautiful, effulgent, exalted form is infused with pure devotion; who is the Guru of the entire universe; and who is the giver of the seed of divine love for the Supreme Lord."

"Do Not Despair"
"You have come to see me. I am your friend, your master, or your everything, I can feel that you feel it. There are so many devotees from different countries here. Different countries means different languages, different cultures, different lifestyles, different food—everything is different; but our conception is one, and that is Krishna consciousness. We have been practising for a long time, then we must have some Krishna-conscious mentality and we can proceed with that to our goal, which is the life of a servitor."

The Pain of Broken Hearts
"We always remember Srimati Radharani, Her associates and other Vraja gopis, but we forget about Nanda Maharaj and Mother Yasomati. It has come out of Radharani's mouth: 'We do not consider our heart's pain, but when we see Mother Yasoda's face and Mother Yasoda's situation without Your presence, our heart is breaking after breaking after breaking.'"

"I Want to Forget"
"I want to go somewhere—I want to get some relief. When I am sitting in the office, I get some relief, but as soon as I go to my room, I again start remembering everything. I want to forget it, but I cannot... It is impossible to forget this. Such is my situation."

Make Service Your Goal, Means, and Sustenance

Unthinkable Situation

"We must not misinterpret what Gurudev told. Devotees all over the world can realise easily what is Srila Sridhar Maharaj's conception, what is Gurudev's conception, and they can understand whether they are following it or not. Your main focus must be always to please your Guru properly. Name and fame is for your guru—you must not preach for your name and fame, you must preach to please your guru."

On this way, Sri Gurupadpadma left our sight... This is a very painful separation day. He is present now in his samadhi form, and from there he is bestowing his mercy upon us. Gurudev's Disappearance [Part 1]
"Today is the holy disappearance day of Om Vishnupad Jagad Guru Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj. He chose this day and left our sight on this day, at 4:20-30 in the morning. He is present now in his samadhi form, and he is bestowing his mercy upon us from there. He always stays within his eternal pastimes...."

"Everything Plunged Into Darkness" [Part 2]
"When Gurudev left this world, I thought, 'Now there is no one left in this world who will chastise me.' I always spoke to Gurudev heart to heart, I told him about all happy and unhappy things, and when Gurudev left this world, I could not understand anything—what was going on, what was going to happen, everything plunged into darkness for me..."

Service Alertness [Part 3]
"I was always alert towards Gurudev—I know everything, what he likes, what he eats, etc. I knew what Gurudev liked to eat, and I would go to the market the day before his arrival, buy everything and have it kept in his kitchen. Gurudev always liked trees and cows..."

Service Milestones [Part 4]
"Gurudev brought me up, he taught me everything. Gurudev told about Vaishnav seva—how one must serve Vaishnavs, how one must serve devotees, how to manage the temple, etc. I have learnt everything from Gurudev. I always did whatever Gurudev told me."

Question: It seems that we have one type of fear that having got some connection with your self we may lose that at death. I do not want to have connection with anyone else, I want to stay with you. So, I feel some type of fear...

Srila B.S. Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj: Fear? But why have fear? I cannot understand it.

Devotee: Because if we do not finish our sadhana nicely, then next life we do not know where we will go—we may not find Govinda Maharaj there.

Srila Govinda Maharaj: What do you think about Govinda Maharaj?

Devotee: We think that we want to serve you.

Srila Govinda Maharaj: No, it is okay that you want to serve Govinda Maharaj, but what do you think about Govinda Maharaj? He is your guru, but in which form do you think about him? Do you think that Govinda Maharaj is a mundane man or an incarnation of the Lord coming in front of you to give you connection with Him? If you think he is an incarnation of the Lord, then he cannot leave your heart and you cannot leave your Lord. Even if you die, you will get that connection in another form, perhaps, but you will not be able to leave your Lord. When you have faith that the Lord always lives with you, then there will be no fear.

That is the main thing. By the mercy of Vaishnavs I also always feel that my Srila Guru Maharaj (Srila B.R. Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj) is present with us. By the mercy of Vaishnavs and the supremacy of Srila Guru Maharaj, such feeling always comes to us that Srila Guru Maharaj has not left us, that he is with us.

I have service of Srila Guru Maharaj, and I must do that. Service to Srila Guru Maharaj is my only goal of life, and whichever way that service comes to me, I will try to serve.

Devotee: In my next life, I want to forever be a blade of grass wherever you walk...

Srila Govinda Maharaj: I do not want to wait for the next life. Actually, we must finish all our job here this life, then we shall all go to Goloka!

Worship Is Not Doll Play
'If you do not feel enthusiastic to serve the Lord, if you are not eager to serve the Lord, if you do not feel happy to chant the glories of the Lord, then you must understand that there is some fault in you. It is not possible to serve Krishna without sadhu-sanga because those who try to do that do not know proper rules and procedure.'

'It is necessary to have faith and to surrender properly. It is necessary to stay within service at every moment. Many think, "I cannot do this", "I cannot do that", but we do not do anything! Gurudev does everything. If I do not do some service, the service will not stop – Gurudev will do it. Always remember this.'

শ্রীগৌড়ীয়-পর্ব্ব-তালিকা (১৪২৯–১৪৩০) [Bengali]
SRI GAUDIYA CALENDAR FOR 2023–2024 [English]
The calendar of auspicious days, festivals and fasting celebrated and observed at Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math for the following year (Sri Gaurabda 537–538, or 2023–2024) is now available online. It can be viewed online and downloaded on mobile phones and tablets and as an illustrated brochure (see the links below or in the Calendar section).

His Divine Grace instructs: "We should always check the calendar, and when we see some dates mentioned there, even if we do not know anything about the Vaishnav or events mentioned there, we can at least give 'jay' to them—that also brings some good sukriti, some purification to us. Seeing the calendar and taking devotees' names early in the morning, from the beginning of the day, is very good for all devotees."

Intoxicated with Animal Life
'Materialistic people are attached to material things and this material family life, always busy with their grandsons and granddaughters. It does not occur to them that "Here, look at this cow that goes out to eat grass on the street and returns to its cowshed in the evening! Are we not just like that?"'

Cherish Your Service
'Chatak birds always look at the sky, waiting for some raindrops to come. Just like such chatak birds, we must always be waiting, "When will Gurudev give his order to me?" This order is what mercy is. If Gurudev says, "Do this job," that is mercy. Mercy is service, nothing else. You can get the Lord through devotion, but what kind of devotion should that be?'

Today in the calendar: Purnima. Vasanta Rasa of Sri Krishna. Rasa Yatra of Sri Sri Balaram. Appearance of Srila Vamsi-vadananda Thakur and Srila Shyamananda Prabhu.

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad Srila B.N. Acharya Maharaj: "Even if you do not know anything about the Vaishnav mentioned in the calendar, you must still give them 'jay' on this day."

In honour of Sri Syamananda Prabhu:

"Srinivas Acharya, Narottam Das Thakur, and Shyamananda Prabhu started for Vrindavan to have the darshan of Srila Rupa Goswami, Srila Sanatan Goswami, Srila Gopala Bhatta Goswami, Srila Raghunatha Bhatta Goswami and others who were there.

"When they were only a few miles away from Mathura, they heard that Sanatan Goswami had passed away. People were saying that that great Sanatan Goswami who was the prime minister and who had captured all people in the whole of Vrindavan within his heart—that Sanatan had passed away, a great disaster for the country. What to do then? Rupa, Raghunath, Jiva and Gopala Bhatta were still living, so Srinivas, Narottam, and Shyamananda dragged somehow on.

When they reached Mathura, they heard that Srila Rupa Goswami had left the night before that. Sanatana left on an ashari purnima, and Srila Rupa Goswami left after that on next dvadasi. They thought, "What hopeless and cursed souls we are! We have come so near, yet we could not see those two generals of Mahaprabhu!" Mahaprabhu sent two of his generals to Vrindavan to carry out His orders and establish the kingdom of the Gaudiya Vaishnavs there... So, they dragged their bodies to Vrindavan and came to Govinda Mandir. When they reached it, they found that an evening aroti was going on there in a very great splendour. There was a great crowd there—Srila Rupa Goswami had just passed away, so with that feeling of high bereavement, everybody was chanting his name madly. Srinivas, Narottam, and Shyamananda Prabhu were there, but Srinivas Acharya could not stand that sort of sentimental wave—he was standing aside and he fainted. When he regained his consciousness, he saw Srila Jiva Goswami with some of his followers...

In this way, Srinivas Acharya, Narottam Das Thakur, and Shyamananda Prabhu stayed in Vrindavan for one year—Srinivas Acharya took initiation from Gopala Bhatta, Narottam Thakur from Lokanath Goswami, and Shyamananda Prabhu from Srila Jiva Goswami Prabhu..."

(Srila B.R. Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj)

"Sri Gauri Das Pandit is one of the twelve cowherd friends of Krishna in Vrindavan. Shyamananda Prabhu was his disciple and followed him in the sakhya-bhav (transcendental mood of friendship with the Lord), however when he later entered the association of Srila Jiva Goswami Prabhu, who was a follower of Sri Rupa Goswami, he exhibited madhura-bhav (transcendental mood of paramour relationship with the Lord). Shyamananda Prabhu was promoted to the manjari group by the mercy of Lalita Devi. Later, Shyamananda Prabhu went to preach with Srila Narottam Das Thakur and Srila Srinivas Acharya. Srila Narottam Das Thakur preached in Bangladesh, Srila Srinivas Acharya Prabhu preached in the north, and Srila Shyamananda Prabhu preached in Midnapore. They preached and protected our line, Rupa Goswami's line, the main conception."

'You must prepare, mould, yourself in this way. Think about these things, about yourself! You always think about your body; nobody thinks about themselves. This body will fall dead in a few days, but you worry so much what you will eat, where you will sleep, where you will stay. Always busy with these worries, you have no time to think about the Lord. Become Good Listener
'When will the inspiration to hear and glorify sadhus awaken within us? When we learn to serve the Lord with love. This is not some service that you do out of duty, out of fear or in the hope to get something in return. Those who listen about the Lord and serve the Lord with love feel very eager to hear and speak about the Lord, and as they listen and listen about the Lord, their devotion gradually increases.'

I offer my respectful obeisances to Swami Bhakti Nirmal Acharya, who is energetically inspiring all of Eastern and Western disciples on the path of pure devotion.

Dear Devotees, Vaishnavs, and Well-Wishers,

Bowing down at your holy feet, we would like to extend a humble and earnest invitation to join the observance of the divine disappearance day of our beloved Sri Gurupadpadma Om Vishnupad Jagad-Guru Sri Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj, that manifests this year on 19 April 2023 (Wednesday).

We pray that devotees can render assistance to the festivals observed in their communities and focus eternally in their lives on contributing the core ingredient of every service endeavour—one's entire being, mind, heart and soul. In the words of His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad Jagad-Guru Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj, "Surrender to the Lord. Have full faith. You must surrender and give everything—your shyness, shame, fear, everything; keep everything at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Krishna, Srimati Radharani, or Gurudev. Give your everything, cent per cent."

His Divine Grace has many times instructed on how to hold special programmes and taught it many times by his own example. Usually such programmes consist of: kirtans, lecture or reading of scriptures, arati, pushpanjali (offering of flowers to a photograph), and prasad-seva (cooking a special offering, offering it at the altar or to a photograph, and distributing it to devotees).

We hope all devotees find an opportunity to observe this holy day for the satisfaction of Sri Gurupadpadma, keeping the divine Guidance on their heads: "Always sit amidst fire blazing on all four sides. This fire is Hari-katha, kirtan, service to the Lord, and service to the guru. You must progress in your practising life keeping the sacrificial fire of your service ablaze."

Today in the calendar: Krishna Dasami. Disappearance of Srila Vrindavan Das Thakur.

"Wake up, look into the calendar and give 'jay' to your Guru and Vaishnavs. Always pay obeisance to your Guru and Vaishnavs when you wake up in the morning, always give them 'jay'. Always keep faith and show respect to them. Always see the calendar—whose appearance day it is, whose disappearance day it is. Even if you cannot make a festival, at least you can give them 'jay', it will bring you benefit. When you give 'jay' to your Guru and Vaishnavs, it brings you sukriti. For example, today is the disappearance day of a Vaishnav—give 'jay' to him, remember him. We must always remember the words of Vaishnavs. If I remember the words of Vaishnavs, I get some benefit, some deposit through that."

Today in the calendar: Krishna Ekadasi. Fast on Varuthini Ekadasi. Disappearance of Sriyukta Saurindranath Bhakti Varidhi Prabhu.

Sri Ekadasi Guidance
Guidelines on how to observe and honour this holy day: Ekadasi takes an indispensible part in the life of a sincere practitioner. At Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math, Ekadasi and paran are observed with affection and without fail according to the dates given in the Calendar.

Srila B.R. Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj about fasting on ekadasi and accepting material facilities:

"One time, a devotee came here from Vrindavan on the day of ekadasi. He reached in the evening and, after taking a bath in the Ganges, attended kirtans, danced, circumambulated the temple and so on. Then, I asked him whether he would take any anukalpa [non-grain prasadam that is allowed to be taken on ekadasi]. He replied, 'Generally, I do not take anything, but if you like, then, of course, I must like anukalpa. Your will is greater than my fasting.' That was his decision.

"My Guru Maharaj (Srila Prabhupad Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur) always wanted maximum energy: you should take good food and do good service. That was his maxim. Krishna is not a liquidated party: take full prasadam and do full service. Do maximum service, and you should take whatever is necessary for that. You are to take it for the cause of Krishna, not for your own cause. You are Krishna's, so if you grow weak, His service will be hampered, and both you and Krishna will be losers thereby. 'My soldiers will be well-fed and well-working.' That was our Guru Maharaj's principle. Napoleon said, 'One full-fed soldier is equal to ten half-fed soldiers.'

"So, prasad-seva: if it is service, then it must be taken in a serving mood, of course. But, at the same time, the individual position of a devotee should be taken into consideration. Sahajiyas do not fast on ekadasi at all: "Oh, we are in Vrindavan, and there is no fasting in Vrindavan." But Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur, Srila Prabhupad did not like that—it is sahajiya (imitation) if you go on feeding your senses in the name of Krishna-bhakti (devotion to the Lord). For the service to Krishna, it is necessary to keep up the body and to provide nourishment to it, so we must take what is necessary for service. We do not like it if by fasting, a loss of energy is effected. If fasting does not hamper your service, you may go on fasting—perhaps, your Gurudev wanted that...

"For service, I must accept what is necessary to make me physically fit so that I can render more service. So, accepting material things is not objectionable. It is fruitful, not detrimental. Rather, it produces something of a pure character, which helps everyone. This is how a disciple receives and accepts things. At that same time, he may even blame himself, 'I cannot go on with my worldly life without the help of this or that!' He will blame himself, but the underlying spirit must be, 'If I do not take it, I shall be unfit; I will not be able to do my bit of service to the Lord, to my Gurudev.'

"Moreover, by taking up renunciation, I will be a loser. I will incur a loss for myself, for the world, and my Guru's service will be hampered. In this spirit, devotees are to take everything. For the cause of Krsna, for the cause of his Guru, they will accept anything.

"Suppose there is a very miserly karmachari (manager). Because he does not want to spend money, he may not attain a particular result; then, some difficulty comes, and the opportunity is lost. This manager will be responsible to the proprietor: 'Why did you not spend money? Why are you afraid of spending money from my store? Because of your miserly habit, the opportunity has been lost!' 'Why should you not spend My money for My interest?' So, to render service to Krishna, to my Gurudev, to Vaishnavs, to the world, to everyone, I must keep up this mundane body, and I am entitled to take something for that.

"Miserliness is mayavada; it is the renunciation spirit, and it will mar Krishna's interest. What we need is yukta-vairagya: I shall take from the store of Krishna to keep myself fit and to do service. It is Krishna's account, and if I do dot do that, I should be a separationist, a mayavadi, a renunciationist. I shall render maximum service to Krishna, and I must take without any hestitation whatever is necessary to make myself fit for the service; otherwise, I shall be punishable."

"Sri Ekadasi" (Sri Sri Prema Vivarta)
"One day, Gaurahari left the Gundicha Temple and sat in the Jagannath Vallabha garden. It was pure Ekadasi, and the Lord spent the whole day and night chanting the Name of Krishna..."

SONG: Suddha-bhakata | শুদ্ধ ভকত-চরণ-রেণু
"I carefully observe the holy days related to Madhava, they are the mother of devotion."

SONG: Sri hari-vasare | শ্রীহরি-বাসরে হরি
"On the holy day of Sri Hari, Sriman Mahaprabhu, the life and soul of the universe, began dancing..."

Exclusive Self-Realisation
'If we think about the Lord, if we spend the whole day on the Lord, if we cook for the Lord every day, work for the Lord every day, if our whole life is for the Lord – when all our mind, body, soul and ego are for the Lord – then we will be able to understand how much illusion we were in.'

"I bow my head in eternal obeisance to my Gurudev, the best of acharyas, Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj. He is the ever vigilant, stalwart guardian of the current of pure devotion whose highest form flows from our most worshippable Sri Rupanuga Guru-varga in their exclusive dedication to Mahabhav, Srimati Radharani."

"A disappearance day is also called viraha-tithi, a separation day. Viraha, separation, comes if there is relation—if you have some relation with the person, then separation comes. When and how does relation come? It comes through service. If you have no service, you have no relation; if you have service, then you have relation, and when there is relation, separation comes. No service—no relation. Remember this."

"You must always listen and speak about the Lord. Where will you find Gurudev? Gurudev has gone now. But you can get his association if you read his books. When I am not here, where will you get my association? I have books – if you read those books, you can get the darshan of your Gurudev and get his association every day. Guru is always with us; he always gives us instruction. If we remember his instructions, his words, if you read his books, we will always get his association through that."
~Srila B.N. Acharya Maharaj

Autobiography of Srila B.N. Acharya Maharaj
To try to describe unlimited glories of a Vaishnav is a very challenging task, and because the nature of Guru is beyond what we can grasp with our material intelligence and beyond what we can perceive with our material senses, it makes the task even harder. Presented here is an autobiographical discourse of His Divine Grace Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj, the current Acharya and Sevaite of Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math.

PHOTO ALBUM
The photographs presented in this dedicated photo album are only a few glimpses into a particle of the service and contribution that His Divine Grace has made. May they however become a source of inspiration for the service and dedication to the lotus feet of Sri Gurudev that His Divine Grace embodies.

The last recorded Hari-katha and Guidance of Sri Gurupadpadma:

Take Care of Yourself [Part 1 | 2 May 2021]
"...This is the situation now—we must all be careful. We must chant more and more, we must preach more and more, and we must practise more and more. Always continue following all the rules and regulations—we must distribute the teachings that we have got from our Gurudev to others."

Sadhus' Fight [Part 2 | 2 May 2021]
"This is a battlefield. We will not run away from the battlefield—we will always stand and fight against Maya. You can see everywhere that finally demons are always defeated by the sadhu. Om is always at the side of a sadhu. Please you all take care yourself. In this situation, everybody should practise on their own, do not be disheartened."

Be Exclusive, One-Pointed [Part 3 | 2 May 2021]
"If you think about good things, then all bad things will automatically be removed from you. Do not worry so much about this. When you think some anartha is coming, you must give more and more attention to practising—concentrate your mind on practising."

KIRTANS:
Gurudev! krpa-bindu diya | গুরুদেব! কৃপাবিন্দু দিয়া
"When I examine myself for qualifications, I find none. Your mercy is everything. If you are not merciful to me, then, crying, I will no longer maintain my life."

Samsara-davanala | সংসার-দাবানল
"I offer my obeisance unto the lotus feet of Sri Guru, the ocean of goodness who assumes the form of a cloud of mercy to deliver the souls burning in the blazing fire of material existence."

Sri-guru-charana-padma | শ্রীগুরুচরণ-পদ্ম
"I carefully offer my obeisance to Sri Guru's lotus feet, which are the sole abode of devotion. O brother! By his mercy we cross over this world and reach Krishna."

Krsna haite chatur-mukha | কৃষ্ণ হৈতে চতুর্ম্মুখ
"Srila Govinda Maharaj's dear successor, who is devoted to practising and preaching his teachings, is Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj. All the Gurus in this succession are associates of Sri Gauranga—I pray for their remnants."

Ki rupe paiba seva | কিরূপে পাইব সেবা
"I am so wicked, how will I ever get service? I do not have any attachment to Sri Guru and Vaishnavs! It is not possible to conquer maya by engaging in maya. I see no other way to get relief except for the mercy of sadhus."

Sri Rupa-manjari-pada | শ্রীরূপমঞ্জরী-পদ
"The lotus feet of Sri Rupa Manjari are my wealth, my bhajan (service), my puja (worship), the wealth of my life, and whatever ornaments I may have. Her lotus feet are the very life of my life."

Amara jivana | আমার জীবন
"My life is always engrossed in sin. There is not a trace of piety within it. I have caused others so much anxiety and trouble. Such a sinner as I is shunned by devotees, and is a constant offender."

Gurudev bada krpa kari | গুরুদেব! বড় কৃপা করি’
"When, O master, will you mercifully grant this servant the qualification to do this? Then my heart will become steadfast, I will tolerate everything, and I will serve the Lord sincerely."

SONG: Ye anila prema dhana | যে আনিল প্রেমধন
"I will break my head on a rock, I will enter into fire. Not finding the association of Sri Gauranga, who performed His Pastimes with all these associates, Narottam Das weeps."

Today in the calendar: Amavasya. Appearance of Srila Gadadhar Pandit Goswami.

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad Srila B.N. Acharya Maharaj: "Even if you do not know anything about the Vaishnav mentioned in the calendar, you must still give them 'jay' on this day. We must always remember disappearance and appearance days of all Vaishnavs. If we can remember such personalities, such great souls, it will bring a great benefit to our spiritual life."

"We should always check the calendar, and when we see some dates mentioned there, even if we do not know anything about the Vaishnav or events mentioned there, we can at least give 'jay' to them—that also brings some good sukriti, some purification to us. Seeing the calendar and taking devotees' names early in the morning, from the beginning of the day, is very good for all devotees."

In honour of Srila Gadadhar Pandit Goswami:

— { Pranam mantra of Sri Gadadhar Pandit Goswami } —

nilambhodhi-tate sada sva-viraha-ksepanvitam bandhavam

srimad-bhagavatam sada sva-nayanasru-payanaih pujayan

"On the shore of the broad blue ocean Gadadhar Pandit used to read Srimad Bhagavatam to Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who was suffering from the great internal pain of separation from Himself (Krishna). Gadadhar Pandit supplied the wine of Krishna-lila to intoxicate his afflicted friend and give Him relief. As he read, tears would fall from his eyes like flower offerings onto the pages of Srimad Bhagavatam. May the pleasure of that brilliant personality, Gadadhar Pandit, the best of the Goswamis, be my only object in writing this book."

(Composed by Srila B.R. Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj)

Sri Gadadhar Pandit: Mahaprabhu's Shadow
(A chapter from Srila Acharya Maharaj's Bengali book Sri Puri Dham Mahatmya-mukta-mala)
"Sri Gadadhar Pandit stayed with Mahaprabhu from his childhood. His father's name was Madhav Misra, and his mother's name was Ratnavali Devi. They lived in Mayapur near Jagannath Misra's house. Mahaprabhu could never stay without Gadadhar Pandit, and Gadadhar Pandit could not stay without Mahaprabhu even a moment too..."

In honour of Sri Sankar Acharya:

Hearing the name of Sri Sankar Acharya, Paramahamsa Babaji Mahasay offered his prostrate obeisance and said:

‘O great soul! “Sankarah Sankarah saksat” (Sankar is Mahadev-Sankar, Lord Siva, himself) – always remember these words. Sankar is a Guru of Vaishnavs, that is why Mahaprabhu spoke of him as an Acharya. Sankar is a perfect Vaishnav. When he made his advent in India, there was a very urgent need in a guna-avatara like him. At that time, discussions of Vedas and practices of varnasrama-dharma had become almost obliterated by the influence of Buddhist voidism, which is extremely atheistic. Although Buddhist doctrine contains some truth about jiva souls, that religion is quite temporal (non-eternal). At that time, almost all brahmans had become Buddhists and had almost completely given up Vedic religion. Filled with wondrous power, the advent of Sankar’s incarnation established the honour of Vedic scriptures and changed voidism into brahmanism. The work he performed is wonderful. India is eternally indebted to Sri Sankar for this great work. All works in the world can be divided into two types. Some works are related to some particular time (temporal), and some are not related to any time (timeless, eternal). The great work of Sankar’s incarnation is temporal, and many good results emerged from it. Sankar’s incarnation created a foundation upon which the incarnations of Sri Ramanuja, Sri Madhva and other great teachers later built the palace of pure Vaishnavism. Therefore, Sankar’s incarnation is the greatest friend of Vaishnavism and a predecessor acharya.

Sri Sankar revealed a conceptual path in this world, and to this day, Vaishnavs easily take advantage of its wealth. Sambandha-jnana (knowledge of the relationship) is extremely necessary for material conditioned souls. Vaishnavs and Sankar Acharya believe that gross bodies existent in this material world are different and separate from transcendental matter, but spiritually, there is no difference between a jiva soul’s internal and external identity. Both agree that giving up material world is called liberation (mukti), and up until attaining liberation, there is very much similarity between Sri Sankar and Vaishnav Acharyas. Sankar Acharya teaches that it is possible to purify one’s heart and attain liberation by practising God consciousness (by serving and worshipping the Lord), but only Sankar is silent about the transcendental path jiva souls face after attaining liberation. Sankar knew very well that if a jiva soul can progress on the path of liberation by serving the Lord, it will gradually, bound by the happiness of spiritual life, become a pure devotee. Therefore, when Sankar showed the path, he did not further reveal the mystery of Vaishnavs. Those who read and consider his commentaries very carefully can understand Sankar’s profound intention. But those who pass their time reading only the external parts of his teachings become driven away from proper Vaishnavism.

Today in the calendar: Gaura Saptami. Jahnu Saptami: Sri Jahnavi Puja (worship of the Ganga).

We must always remember disappearance and appearance days of all Vaishnavs. If we can remember such personalities, such great souls, it will bring a great benefit to our spiritual life."

In honour of Sri Jahnavi Puja (Sri Ganga Puja):

"...While speaking, they went to Jan Nagar and saw the beauty of the hermitage of Jahnu Muni. Nityananda Prabhu said, 'This charming abode is known as Jahnudwip and Bhadravan. Jahnu Muni performed austerities here and saw the golden form of Gaura. Once, when Jahnu Muni sat here to perform his evening meditation, His copper vessel fell into the swiftly flowing River Ganga. The copper vessel fell into the river and floated away. Jahnu Muni then drank all the water of the Ganga with his palm. Maharaj Bhagirath thought, "Where did the Ganga go?" Bewildered, he began to think over the situation. Understanding that Jahnu Muni had drunk all the water of the Ganga, Maharaj Bhagirath became concerned. Sober Maharaj Bhagirath worshipped the sage for some time, and eventually the Ganga broke out of the sage's body. Thereafter, she became known as Jahnavi. The whole world now calls her 'Jahnavi'.'"

Messengers of Highest Giver
'On this day, it is not only Jagannath Misra and Mother Sachi who rejoice. Yesterday was a happy day for all gods and goddesses, for the whole world, and today is a joyful festival, but seeing that everyone is rushing to leave and jump back into their material life, I feet very sad.'

Offering Bhog on Ekadasi
"Sometimes, devotees live in their house and if they offer rice, dal, or kitchuri on ekadasi, how will they take it? They do not want to throw away food, so they do not offer grains on this day. However, if it is a temple with Deities, then we should offer everything, both ekadasi and non-ekadasi preparations."

Love Your Service
'It is necessary to serve the temple and the mission with love and affection. Whether you are happy or unhappy, whether you are struggling or not – you must serve with love and affection. If you can do your service properly, that is sufficient.'

Today in the calendar: Gaura Navami. Appearance of Sri Jahnava Devi (Sri Nityananda-sakti) and Sri Sita Devi (Sri Rama-sakti).

In honour of Sri Sita Devi:

"Lord Ramachandra said to Sri Sita Devi, 'Loving devotion to Me is relished in two ways. O Sita, please hear My words. The joy felt during union with Me is called sambhoga. The joy felt during separation from Me is called vipralambha. My devotees, My eternal associates, desire sambhoga, and by My grace, they experience vipralambha. Devotees know that the sadness felt for My sake during vipralambha is actually the greatest joy. When sambhoga occurs after vipralambha, the happiness felt is ten million times greater than before. Separation from Me is the cause of that happiness. Accept this as truth; the four Vedas affirm it. During My Pastimes as Sri Gauranga, Mother Kausalya, who is known in the Vedas as Aditi, will appear as Sachi Devi. You will serve Me as Visnu Priya. In separation from Me, You will make a Deity of My golden form. In separation from You, I will make a golden Sita and worship You in Ayodhya. In exchange, You will make a Deity of My golden form and worship Me in Nadia. O Sita, these profound topics are very confidential. They will not be revealed to the public now. Nabadwip is very dear to Me: neither Ayodhya nor any other place is equal to it.'"

(Sri Nabadwip Dham Mahatmya, chapter 14)

Niti and Priti
"It was Ramachandra's vijay utsav yesterday, and we would like to clarify some things about Rama-tattva and Krishna-tattva. In Rama-lila, rules and regulations are the highest, and love and affection go down, but this is not the highest ideal..."

Lord Nityananda Prabhu's Sakti

Service Foundation
'It is possible to practise Krishna consciousness only when you have sincerity, anugatya (strict adherence, submission) and nistha (constancy). Serve according to your qualification. We do not want to be big things, it is not necessary. Only do the service that Gurudev has given you with your heart and soul.'

Be Strong and Straight
"When you live at the temple, you engage only in sravan, kirtan, you take prasadam, and when you live in your house, you must engage yourself in the same way—even if you live as a householder, you should still do everything that we do at the temple."

Heartfelt and Fervent
'Even two trees can get Your lotus feet, can get mercy from You, Prabhu! But I am even lower than that, I have no devotion, but You can rescue me..'

Sri Sri Prema-Vivarta
“Do not endeavour to make monasteries, temples, or big houses, but if you have wealth, brother, then you can make them, as you desire.”

Gurudev has left, but he has left many things here—he has left his devotees, his Deities,
his temples; he has left the scriptures, his words. We will find him there.
